About Dimension Hierarchies

Dimension hierarchies define relationships and consolidations between members. Relationships are represented in a graphical hierarchy diagram.

In an Enterprise Profitability and Cost Management hierarchy, the dimension is at the top of the hierarchy, and the levels below it are members of the dimension. Members with levels under them are called parents. Members of the same level under a given parent are called children in relation to the parent, and siblings in relation to each other. Members at any level under a parent are called descendants.

In the following example, the Period dimension has a YearTotal child member. The YearTotal member has Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 child members, which represent quarters. The quarters have child members for the corresponding months. Monthly data values roll up to the quarters, and quarterly data values roll up to the year total.
