Creating Multiple Rule Sets

Use the Rule Sets page to create multiple rule sets at once. This is useful when you need to create a large number of rule sets in a model. You can create the initial outline of the rule sets, and then later come back to define the specific details for each rule set. This can save you time and help you manage your models more efficiently.

To create multipe rule sets:

  1. From the Home page, select Modeling, and then Designer.

  2. On the Waterfall Setup tab, click the Model drop-down, and select a model.

  3. Click plus icon, and select Multiple Rule Sets.

  4. On the Rule Sets page, click plus icon to add a new rule set, and then enter the following information:

    • Name: Enter a name for the rule set.

For example, the BksML50 sample application provided with Enterprise Profitability and Cost Management has a rule set called "Occupancy Expense Allocations".

    • Sequence: Enter a number to determine the order in which the rule set will run. The sequence also determines the order in which the rule set is displayed on the Waterfall Setup tab. The sequence can be any whole number from 1 to 9999.

    • Enabled: If selected, the rule set will be active when the calculation is performed.

    • Use Model Context: If selected, the member selections done during model creation will apply to all the rules in the rule set. When you use a model context, you avoid having to select the same members for every rule, which saves time and ensures consistency. See Understanding Model and Rule Set Context.

    • Description: Enter a description for the rule set.

Enter a description that will make the information about the rule set informative for anyone reviewing the model logic in the future.

For example, a description for an Occupancy Expense Allocations rule set could be: "Occupancy expenses are reassigned from cost centers where the expenses are paid to the cost centers that use the facilities. A Rule Set Context is defined for Activity, Product, Customer, and Region dimensions to select the No<dimname> members as the dimensions are not used in these rules."

The description you enter here will appear in the Model Documentation report. See Generating a Model Documentation Report.

  5. Add as many rule sets as desired, and then click Save.

  6. Click OK in the Express Edit Rule Sets Status dialog box to return to the Rule Designer.

When you add a new rule set, it is displayed with the existing rule sets on the Waterfall Setup page. You can then select the rule set and click Edit Rule Set button (Edit) to add more detailed information about the rule set.

Note:

If you reopen the Rule Sets page to add additional rule sets or to make changes to rule set information, you cannot edit the selection for Use Model Context on previously-created rule sets.
