Personalizing content based on a visitor profile

You can personalize and target campaign content based on a visitor's profile.

What do you know about the profile of your customers? What common attributes do they share? Are they new or returning customers? Did they arrive on your site from an email campaign? This type of information is very important in helping you determine the group of visitors to target in a campaign. Targeting helps you create rules at the campaign or experience level for user journeys, content, or promotions. You can target based on contextual, behavioral, and demographic data.

In this example, we are going to test the homepage of our retail website to see if our male and female visitors prefer a personalized homepage. A custom attribute, Gender, already exists for this site and captures the gender of visitors as they browse the site.

  1. Create a new version of the homepage, Male, containing products from the menswear section.
  2. Create a new version of the homepage, Female, containing products from the womenswear section.
  3. In the Targeting tab, create a new content rule, Male Visitors, and only show them the Default and Male content variants.
  4. Create a new content rule, Female Visitors, and only show them the Default and Female content variants.
  5. All other visitors should see a mix of both variants and the Default content to determine the best content for everyone else.

To exclude a specific group of visitors from your content, click the IS operator to change it to IS NOT.

There are over 20 standard attributes available for targeting. Check out Standard attributes for Targeting.
