Get started with segments

When existing segments in QuickStart don’t meet your needs for categorizing your data, you can create a new segment. You can create a segment from an existing transaction entry or other record entry, or from the Customization section Segments page.

Segments are classification custom fields which serve to support your analytics and reporting needs including the financial reports and general ledger (GL). Segments let you categorize data, enabling you to better organize and manage your data to meet your organization’s needs. If you have the administrator access profile or the additional Customization: create fields and segments permissions set assigned, you can create and edit segments in QuickStart.

People working in QuickStart can use segments to classify supported records and transactions. You can use the collected values in financial or analytical reports that support the segment. In supported QuickStart reports, segments can be available as filters, columns, or criteria for grouping rows.

For example, if you want to classify records and transactions by department, create a custom segment named Department and add your department names as its values. You can use the same segment workflow for a classification named Class or Profit Center. Department and Class are names you can give custom segments, not separate segment types to select when creating one.
