Get started with product items
Create a product item for a physical or virtual product that your company buys, sells, tracks in inventory, or uses in a combination of those workflows. The purchasing, sales, and inventory options determine which forms can use the product and which price, cost, tax, and account information QuickStart requires.
The configuration you enable determines where the product can be used:
- Turn on Item is purchasable to use the product on purchase transactions. You can enter a preferred vendor, the vendor’s item identifier, a purchase description, and a cost.
- Turn on Item is sellable to use the product on sales transactions. You can enter a shipping weight and a price.
- Turn on Inventory tracking to track quantity and inventory value by operating location. Select the costing method used to value the inventory.
- For a non-inventory product, select Can be fulfilled or received when the product should be processed through item receipts and item fulfillments. This preference is hidden when Inventory tracking is on because inventory products use inventory receiving and fulfillment workflows.
QuickStart supplies default accounting values based on the enabled configurations. Review the Accounting section before creating the item. Inventory products use an inventory assets account and COGS account; sellable products use a revenue account; and non-inventory purchasable products use an expense account. Additional accounts are available through Show advanced accounts.
