Setting Up NAICS Codes

Federal statistical agencies use the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) to classify business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.

As we move forward with the Redwood Experience, NAICS will be referred to as Industry Classifications.

When you access the Industry Classification page, it will open in a new browser tab.

Understanding NAICS Code Setup

NAICS codes enable an applicant to select an industry standard classification for a business when applying for a license. To set up NAICS codes for your agency:

1. Add NAICS codes on the NAICS Codes page.

2. Create subsets of NAICS codes on the NAICS Groups page.

3. Select a NAICS group for each business license type on the Business License Type page.

   The NAICS group associated with the business license type determines which NAICS codes are available to select when applying for a business license.

Adding an Industry Classification

1. Select the Setup and Maintenance tile on the Agency Springboard to access Functional Setup Manager.

2. From the Setup drop-down list, select your offering.

3. Select System Administration from Functional Areas and then select the Manage Industry Classification task.

4. On the Industry Classification page, click Add.

5. On the New industry classification drawer, enter values for the following fields:

   Page Element	Description
   Industry Classification	Enter the industry classification code.
   Industry Title	Enter a short descriptive title for the industry classification.
   Description	Enter a long description for the industry classification.

6. Verify that the Enabled switch is turned on. The switch is turned on by default for new industry classifications.

7. Click Save.

Modifying or Deleting an Industry Classification

1. On the Industry Classification page, select the row for the industry classification you want to modify.

2. On the Industry classification details drawer you can:

   • Edit the industry title and description.

   • Enable or disable the industry classification using the Enabled switch.

     If you disable an industry classification, but it’s still included in the list of enabled codes for a NAICS group, it will continue to be available to select on business license applications. You can’t add a disabled industry classification to a NAICS group.

   • Delete the industry classification. You will be prompted to confirm the permanent deletion.

3. Click Save.
