Enhanced Statutory Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay for Northern Ireland Employees

From 6 April 2026, an enhanced statutory parental bereavement pay process applies to employees gainfully employed in Northern Ireland. It extends payment eligibility to miscarriage-related absences and provides day-one eligibility. The application assesses Northern Ireland employment status, absence type, service, and earnings to apply the appropriate statutory payment rules, and it records and reports qualifying payments separately from existing statutory parental bereavement pay.

Helps to ensure statutory parental bereavement payments and reporting are accurate for eligible Northern Ireland employees. Separate payroll balances, support clear payroll reporting and reconciliation.

Tips and considerations

• A Northern Ireland workplace postcode is required when the Northern Ireland employee indicator is selected and must use the required postcode format.
• The system determines the applicable statutory payment rules from the employee's Northern Ireland employment status, absence type, service, and earnings information.
• Existing statutory parental bereavement pay processing continues to apply when the extended Northern Ireland eligibility conditions aren't met.
