Configure Measure-Based Exceptions

This topic covers how to configure measure-based exceptions in Supply Planning, Sales and Operations Planning, Demand Management, and Replenishment Planning.

You can create measure-based exceptions where the measure forms the foundation for that exception. After you select a measure, you can specify the dimension hierarchy and level for that measure, and the threshold value or measure to generate the exception. For example, you can create an exception to identify resource overloads when the resource utilization percentage is greater than 110%.

Configure Exceptions That Are Measure Based

Use the following general steps to configure a user-defined exception that's measure based.

1. In a Supply Chain Planning work area, click the Tasks panel drawer and click Configure Exceptions.

2. On the Configure Exceptions page, click Actions and then select Create.

3. In the Create Exception dialog box, General Properties section, specify or enter information for the following fields:

   1. Exception

   2. Display Name

   3. Exception Group

   4. Base Measure

4. In the Exception Detail section, on the Level tab, select the dimension and its corresponding hierarchy and level to use for your exception

   What you select for levels determines the combination at which the exception condition is evaluated. For example, if you select levels Item and Organization, then the exception criteria is evaluated for each unique combination of Item and Organization.

   Note: Configure Exceptions is a task defined outside of plan context. When configuring exceptions for measure-based plans, ensure the selected hierarchy is in the plan's dimension catalog in plan options. Otherwise item level exceptions might be blank after running a plan.

5. On the Threshold tab:

   1. Select an operation.

   2. Define a threshold for the base measure, which can be defined based on a value or another measure.

6. On the Notification tab, define the notification attributes.

7. When done, click Save and Close.

Exception Detail Section

In the Create Exception dialog box, the Level tab in the Exception Detail section is populated based on the base measure. The Level tab consists of dimension, hierarchy, and level.

For example, for the user-defined exception Fill Rate Shortfall Percentage, the details are populated based on the base measure Fill Rate Shortfall Percentage. As defined on the Threshold tab, the planning process generates this exception when the Fill Rate Shortfall percentage is greater than 10%.

For this exception, the populated dimensions are Organization and Product. You can select dimensions and their corresponding hierarchy and levels. In this example for the Product dimension, you can select either Item or Category as the level.

If you select the Item level, the planning process generates this exception for any item with the Fill Rate Shortfall Percentage of greater than 10% as defined in the Threshold tab. This case enables you to analyze the plan output in more detail. At the same time, the number of exceptions could be large enough that analyzing each exception might not be possible.

On the other hand, if you select the Category level, the planning process generates this exception for any category with the Fill Rate Shortfall Percentage of greater than 10%. In this case, the number of exceptions is lower than the item level scenario. But, potentially some issues that exists at the item level aren't visible since the planning process generates an exception only when the specified criterion holds at the category level.
