Order Management

Order management is where you create order bases and order releases.

An order in Oracle Transportation Management is a generic term and does not imply direction; for example, outbound to customers or inbound from vendors. Orders are most likely created in some external order management software package or an ERP (enterprise resource planning) system such as E-Business Suite. Orders are then transmitted to Oracle Transportation Management for transportation management and planning. However, you can also enter orders directly in the system and initiate transportation planning and optimization.

Order management is where you create order bases and order releases as well as check OTM statuses. See the Order Management Overview, Order Model Overview, and Order Releasing Process for an explanation of order bases, order releases, etc.

Orders can be described as two distinct business objects: order base and order release.

An order configuration determines how ship units are created on order bases and releases and how calculations are to be performed when an order is being built.

Order Base

An order base represents the detailed information about the order; for example, an order ID, the involved party, scheduling information, source and destination locations, accessorials, special services, as well as the content of the order. Order content is described in terms of packaging (called ship units) or individual line items. For example, item data could be pallets of goods, bulk quantities of chemicals, or individual items.

Once an order base is entered, one or more order releases are created that signify that an order is ready for shipment.

When an order base is ready for shipping, you must create an order release.

  • A release may be a partial line or several lines of an order base.
  • A release can also be several partial lines. For example, an open purchase order with many lines may have a release against it that contains some quantity of all the lines.

OTM can automatically create an order release or you can specify in the order base the exact details of what to release.

Note: You can plan shipments from an order release or an order movement, but not an order base.

Order Release

An order release represents the transportation requirements for the movement of goods. A release is a way of taking an order and dividing it into one or more individual transportation requirements that require planning and execution. See Order Release Flow for details.

An order release can be created from the release instructions specified on an order base or independently of an order base. An order release always contains at least one ship unit or one line item. Some details are copied from the order base. Other field values can be entered to control shipment planning and while some values are calculated during the order release process.

You can also create a multistop order.
