Oracle Voluntary Product Accessibility Template

Name of Product: Automated Cartridge System Library Software 8.1
Alternate Titles:
  • ACSLS
Last Updated: 09-Dec-2011

This VPAT applies to only version 8.1. It does not apply to any versions of Automated Cartridge System Library Software after this.
This VPAT has been superseded by Automated Cartridge System Library Software 8.2

ACSLS (Automated Cartridge System Library Software) is a control server for Oracle StorageTek tape libraries. The ACSLS server accepts client requests for tape mounts and dismounts and related library operations. It provides APIs for client tape applications (such as backup software) using tcp/ip/rpc, and SCSI. It offers a command-line interface for most operational functions and most administrative functions. It offers a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) for many operational functions and for some administrative functions involving logical libraries.

This VPAT does not cover the following product areas:

Installation and configuration of ACSLS is accomplished by command-line Unix shell utilities accessed via keyboard and monitor.

Please refer to Appendix-N of the ACSLS 8.1 Administrator's Guide

When running on Microsoft Windows, the Java Access Bridge for Windows must be installed to support assistive technologies.

Steps required to configure accessibility modes in ACSLS.

GUI Tree Menu

The ACSLS GUI allows for an expanded or collapsed tree menu. By collapsing the tree menu, the complexity of the menu is hidden behind a few initial selections which become expanded as the menu portions are selected. But for sight-impaired users who may rely on keyboard navigation or an audio summary of the menu, a collapsed tree menu may keep large portions of the GUI hidden from view. To enable an expanded tree menu, follow this procedure:

  1. Locate the 'Preferences' button which is the first of three buttons at the extreme top right corner of the ACSLS GUI Masthead. Asserting the 'Preferences' button will cause the Preferences page to be displayed in the right-hand frame of the GUI.

  2. In the 'Per-user Preferences' portion of the Preferences frame, locate the 'Default Tree Menu' drop-down menu.

  3. Assert the drop-down arrow and select "expanded".

  4. Once the 'expanded' choice has been selected, locate the two buttons at the top-right corner of the Preferences frame and assert the "set" button.

The information below describes this product's ability to support the applicable U.S. Section 508 standards and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0 Double-A Guidelines, subject to Oracle's interpretation of those standards and the remarks in this document.

When an image represents a program element, the information conveyed by the image must also be available in text. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Alt-text identifiers are supported behind each functional graphical component to describe its role, state or value. Using Java Server Faces (JSF) tooltips, each graphical component is exposed to assistive technology with interpretive text.

1194.21(e) When bitmap images are used to identify controls, status indicators, or other programmatic elements, the meaning assigned to those images shall be consistent throughout an application's performance. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Product inspection revealed that each unique graphical element in the ACSLS GUI is used to convey a consistent meaning throughout the application.  Product testing also verified that graphical elements in the ACSLS GUI are supported with meaningful alternative text, except where indicated in section 1194-22 (a).

1194.21(f) Textual information shall be provided through operating system functions for displaying text. The minimum information that shall be made available is text content, text input caret location, and text attributes. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The fields for text input are simple, single-line text boxes no larger than 32 characters. The location of the caret is pronounced in each of these input fields.

1194.21(g) Applications shall not override user selected contrast and color selections and other individual display attributes. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested for:

  • Response to the operating system High Contrast mode
  • Response to the operating system Large Fonts mode
1194.21(h) When animation is displayed, the information shall be displayable in at least one non-animated presentation mode at the option of the user. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

ACSLS has no moving, blinking, or scrolling information.

1194.21(i) Color coding shall not be used as the only means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Where colors are used, the image component includes alternate text to convey equivalent information.  Font styles are not used in the ACSLS GUI to convey information.

1194.21(j) When a product permits a user to adjust color and contrast settings, a variety of color selections capable of producing a range of contrast levels shall be provided. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Testing has verified that contrast ratios are consistently above 4.5:1 in the navigation tree frame, data tables, log pages, and operational pages.

Contrast ratios in the Masthead frame fall below 4.5:1 for several smaller text elements using white font over a blue background.

1194.21(k) Software shall not use flashing or blinking text, objects, or other elements having a flash or blink frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

No such flickering or flashing is employed in the ACSLS application.

1194.21(l) When electronic forms are used, the form shall allow people using assistive technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues. Section 1194.22 Web-based Internet Information and Applications

Criteria
Supporting Features
Remarks (e.g., definition, equivalent facilitation, scope of support provided)
1194.22(a) A text equivalent for every non-text element shall be provided (e.g., via "alt", "longdesc", or in element content). Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The functional images on data pages,  operational pages, and those on the Masthead include meaningful ALT text.

In the Navigation Tree frame, there are functional images which are not supported with ALT text. These are anchors to actions that expand the tree index. To eliminate the need for these anchors, it is possible for users to configure tree index so that it is completely expanded by default. This is accomplished by a preference setting asserted from the 'preferences' button in the Masthead.

There are decorative images that are not marked with ALT="". These include:

  • Product logo images on the Login screen.
  • A Java icon on the Masthead.
  • Folder images in the Navigation Tree frame.

Product inspection has verified that data tables include a summary caption at the top of the table.

Inspection verified that data pages and operational pages include a meaningful title. The Navigation Tree frame includes a title.

1194.22(b) Equivalent alternatives for any multimedia presentation shall be synchronized with the presentation. Not Applicable

There is no video provided from this application.

1194.22(c) Web pages shall be designed so that all information conveyed with color is also available without color, for example from context or markup. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The Masthead includes color coded dashboard elements to indicate faulty status conditions. Users can look beside each status icon where any number higher than zero signifies the same alert by displaying how many library resources share the errant status.

1194.22(d) Documents shall be organized so they are readable without requiring an associated style sheet. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

No custom style sheets are used in this application.

1194.22(e) Redundant text links shall be provided for each active region of a server-side image map. Not Applicable

Image maps are not used in this application.

1194.22(f) Client-side image maps shall be provided instead of server-side image maps except where the regions cannot be defined with an available geometric shape. Not Applicable

Image maps are not used.

1194.22(g) Row and column headers shall be identified for data tables. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Data tables are designed with identified row and column headers.

1194.22(h) Markup shall be used to associate data cells and header cells for data tables that have two or more logical levels of row or column headers. Not Applicable

No such complex tables exist with multiple levels of table headings.

1194.22(i) Frames shall be titled with text that facilitates frame identification and navigation. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

With the exception of the Masthead frame, the pages in each frame are identified by means of a meaningful title element.

1194.22(j) Pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz. Not Applicable

No such flickering is employed in this application.

1194.22(k) A text-only page, with equivalent information or functionality, shall be provided to make a web site comply with the provisions of this part, when compliance cannot be accomplished in any other way. The content of the text-only page shall be updated whenever the primary page changes. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Text–only pages are not necessary because pages have been coded to meet other applicable standards, to the extent indicated.

1194.22(l) When pages utilize scripting languages to display content, or to create interface elements, the information provided by the script shall be identified with functional text that can be read by assistive technology. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The product was tested to verify that content generated by JavaScript has been coded to meet other applicable standards, to the extent indicated.

1194.22(m) When a web page requires that an applet, plug-in or other application be present on the client system to interpret page content, the page must provide a link to a plug-in or applet that complies with §1194.21(a) through (l). Not Applicable

No plugin is required for http clients of the ACSLS GUI.

1194.22(n) When electronic forms are designed to be completed on-line, the form shall allow people using assistive technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

Form elements are identified with meaningful labels.

1194.22(o) A method shall be provided that permits users to skip repetitive navigation links. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right. Repetitive data does not reside on the top of any page. Header markup is not used for formatting effects. Pages are rendered by Woodstock Java classes into standard html format.
1194.22(p) When a timed response is required, the user shall be alerted and given sufficient time to indicate more time is required. Product has been developed to conform to this standard subject to the remarks on the right.

The ACSLS application uses client-side AJAX technology for updating the alarms components on the masthead. AJAX initiates retrieval of data from the server asynchronously in the background without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page. The client probes the server once every few seconds for alarm updates. Only the alarms icons on the masthead will be impacted by this activity. No other pages are affected.

These changes are dynamically visible to a magnifier, but a screen reader must focus on the specific alarm element that might be updated. Since there are four different alarm elements on the masthead such a monitoring method is not practical. To stay current with any alarm status, the screen reader user can monitor either the system event table or the log viewer for audible updates regarding any possible alarm condition.

Note to 1194.22: The Board interprets paragraphs (a) through (k) of this section as consistent with the following priority 1 Checkpoints of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1.0) (May 5 1999) published by the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium: Paragraph (a) - 1.1, (b) - 1.4, (c) - 2.1, (d) - 6.1, (e) - 1.2, (f) - 9.1, (g) - 5.1, (h) - 5.2, (i) - 12.1, (j) - 7.1, (k) - 11.4.
