Perform Diagnostics on the Local UI

Use the Local UI to generate diagnostic dumps, capture network traffic, and review Edge Node information while the Edge Node is connected to ECP.

The Diagnostics page provides access to Diagnostic Dump and Packet Capture. You can use these diagnostic tools while the Edge Node is connected to ECP.

A diagnostic dump captures a snapshot of the Edge Node for troubleshooting and support. The diagnostic dump includes:

  • System information—Host details, uptime, CPU, memory, and disk usage.
  • Logs—Platform logs and Edge application logs.
  • Network configuration—Interfaces, routing, firewall rules, and connectivity information.
  • Service status—Health and status information for critical platform services.
  • Container and Edge runtime details—Running containers, statistics, and configurations.
  • Edge application data—Edge Agent state, KVStore information, Rule Engine information, and Entity Manager data.
  • Device-specific information—Wi-Fi, cellular, and GPS information, when applicable.
  • Security and hardware information—TPM details and firewall and NFT rules.
  • Traffic and QoS information—Network traffic control and connection-tracking information, when enabled.

The contents of a diagnostic dump are fixed. Changing the Edge Node configuration doesn't customize the information collected in the diagnostic dump.

Packet Capture records network traffic on the Edge Node and generates a .pcap file that you can use for network troubleshooting and protocol analysis.

Note:

If another Edge operation that prevents a diagnostic operation from running is in progress, you can't start Diagnostic Dump or Packet Capture until the current operation completes.

When the Edge Node is connected to ECP, the Settings and Devices pages remain available in read-only mode.

  1. To generate a diagnostic dump:
    1. Log in to the Local UI for the Edge Node.
    2. Navigate to the Settings tab and click Diagnostics.
    3. In the Diagnostic Dump card, click View Details.

The Diagnostic Dump view displays previously generated diagnostic dumps in the Results section, if available.

If no diagnostic dumps are available, the Results section displays an empty state.

You can download a previously generated diagnostic dump from the Results section.

    4. Click Start.

You don't need to specify any input parameters to generate a diagnostic dump.

Click Cancel to close the view without starting the operation.

    5. Confirm that you want to generate the diagnostic dump.

The Local UI starts the diagnostic-dump operation and displays the Information page.

    6. On the Information page, monitor the diagnostic-dump operation.

The Information page displays the status of the operation and indicates whether the operation is in progress, completes successfully, or fails.

    7. After the operation completes, click Diagnostics.
    8. In the Diagnostic Dump card, click View Details.
    9. Locate the generated diagnostic dump in the Results section and click the download action.

The diagnostic dump is downloaded as a ZIP file.

  2. To capture network traffic:
    1. Log in to the Local UI for the Edge Node.
    2. Click Diagnostics.
    3. In the Packet Capture card, click Manage Packet Capture.

The Packet Capture view contains the Basic Inputs, Filters, and Results sections.

    4. In Basic Inputs, specify the required packet-capture values.
      Field Description
Interface Select the interface for which you want to capture network traffic. Select All Interfaces to capture traffic across the Edge interfaces.
Duration Specify the capture duration in seconds. The minimum duration is 30 seconds, the default is 60 seconds, and the maximum is 300 seconds.
    5. To limit the network traffic included in the packet capture, specify one or more optional values in Filters.
      Field Description
Protocol Select TCP, UDP, ICMP, or SCTP. The field is blank by default.
Source IP Specify the source IP address to include in the packet capture.
Source Port Specify the source port to include in the packet capture.
Destination IP Specify the destination IP address to include in the packet capture.
Destination Port Specify the destination port to include in the packet capture.
    6. Click Start.

Start is available when the required fields contain valid values and no conflicting Edge operation is in progress.

Click Cancel to close the view without starting the packet capture.

    7. Confirm that you want to start the packet capture.

The Local UI starts the packet-capture operation and displays the Information page.

    8. On the Information page, monitor the packet-capture operation.

The Information page displays the status of the operation and indicates whether the operation is in progress, completes successfully, or fails.

    9. After the operation completes, click Diagnostics.
    10. In the Packet Capture card, click Manage Packet Capture.

The Results section displays previously generated packet captures, if available.

You can download a completed packet capture from the Results section.

    11. Locate the generated packet capture in the Results section and click the download action.

The packet capture is downloaded as a .pcap file.

    Note:

A packet capture has a maximum duration of 300 seconds and a maximum capture size of approximately 300 MB.

    Note:

Device packet-capture results are retained for 30 days. Results older than 30 days expire and are no longer available for download. Cloud Connectors display only the last 3 results.

    Note:

Packet Capture is supported for Edge Nodes running release 26.3 or later.

    Caution:

Packet captures can contain customer network traffic, including sensitive payload data. Handle downloaded packet-capture files according to your organization's data-security requirements.

Use a packet-analysis application that supports the PCAP file format to review a downloaded .pcap file.

  3. To review settings and device information while the Edge Node is connected to ECP:
    1. Click Settings.

The Settings page displays the current configuration in read-only mode. Controls for modifying or saving the configuration are unavailable.

The Local UI displays an indication that the information is read-only while the Edge Node is connected to ECP.

    2. Click Devices.

The Devices page displays the devices and their information in read-only mode.

Actions that add, edit, delete, or otherwise modify devices are unavailable while the Edge Node is connected to ECP.

Diagnostic Dump and Packet Capture remain available from the Local UI while the Edge Node is connected to ECP. The Settings and Devices pages remain available in read-only mode while the Edge Node is connected.
