Restore SMB Access After an Address Change

Reconnect to the ECP Data Bridge SMB share when the Cloud Connector IP address changes.

A connection that uses the Cloud Connector hostname can continue to use the same hostname after the IP address changes. A connection that uses the previous IP address must be recreated using the current IP address.

Ensure that:

  • ECP Data Bridge is running.

  • Port 445 is open on the network used to access the Cloud Connector.

  • The Windows or macOS system can reach the Cloud Connector.

  • You have the Cloud Connector hostname or its current IP address.

  • You have the ECP Data Bridge SMB share name.

  • You have the credentials for an enabled ECP Data Bridge account.

  1. Determine whether the unavailable SMB connection uses the Cloud Connector hostname or an IP address.
  2. If the connection uses the hostname:
    1. Verify that the hostname resolves to the current Cloud Connector IP address.
    2. Disconnect the unavailable SMB connection.
    3. Connect to the share again using the same hostname. Use one of the following formats:
      • Windows:
        \\<Cloud-Connector-hostname>\<SMB-share-name>
      • macOS
        smb://<username>@<Cloud-Connector-hostname>/<SMB-share-name>
The SMB configuration does not need to be updated solely because the Cloud Connector IP address changed.
  3. If the connection uses the previous IP address:
    1. Obtain the current Cloud Connector IP address.
    2. Disconnect or remove the SMB connection that uses the previous IP address.
    3. Connect to the share again using the current IP address. Use one of the following formats:
      • Windows
        \\<current-Cloud-Connector-IP-address>\<SMB-share-name>
      • macOS
        smb://<username>@<current-Cloud-Connector-IP-address>/<SMB-share-name>
  4. When prompted, enter the username and password for the ECP Data Bridge account.
  5. Open the SMB share and verify that its contents are available.
  6. If the connection still fails, verify that:
    • The hostname or IP address is correct.

    • The system can reach the Cloud Connector.

    • Port 445 is open.

    • ECP Data Bridge and its SMB service are running.

    • The account is enabled.

    • The current account password is being used.

For complete connection instructions, see:

  • Map the SMB Share in Windows

  • Connect to the SMB Share from macOS

Note:

Use the Cloud Connector hostname where possible. A hostname-based connection does not need to be recreated each time the Cloud Connector IP address changes, provided that the hostname resolves correctly.
