19 Working with Media Streams

In Oracle Communications Unified Inventory Management (UIM), media streams represent content such as audio or video media delivered over cable, satellite, radio, or streaming IP.

You use Media Stream entities to represent media content and to manage its delivery in UIM. For example, you can use Media Stream entities to represent provisionable or subscription video services such as tiered services and a la carte packages.

Logical devices control how users gain access to the media streams they subscribe to. To represent this relationship in UIM, you associate media streams to logical devices.

Media Stream entities include many of the same features as other entities. You can reserve media streams, assign conditions to them, and include them in business interactions. UIM manages media stream life cycles the same way it manages other resource entities.

See the following topics for more information about working with media streams:

Associating Media Streams to Logical Devices

You can associate media streams to logical devices from Media Stream Summary pages. A media stream can be associated to any number of logical devices, and a logical device can be associated with any number of media streams. When you associate a media stream to a logical device, you specify a value for the media handle, which provides more information on their association.

You can also associate a media stream to a logical device from a Logical Device Summary page. See "Associating Logical Devices to Media Streams" for more information.

To associate a media stream to a logical device:

  1. Open the Media Stream Summary page of a media stream that you want to associate to a logical device.

  2. In the Granted by Logical Devices section, click Add.

The Associate Logical Device dialog box appears, containing a search section.

  3. Search for or create a Logical Device entity.

  4. In the Search Results section, select a Logical Device entity.

  5. Click OK.

The Associate Logical Device dialog box closes. The link to the logical device appears in the Granted by Logical Devices section.

  6. Click Edit in the Granted by Logical Devices section toolbar.

One or more Media Handle fields become available and the Save button is enabled.

  7. In the Media Handle fields, enter values for the media handles.

  8. Click Save.

Removing Logical Device Associations from Media Streams

You can remove a logical device association from a media stream. Because media streams can have any number of associations to logical devices, you do not have to unassociate a logical device before adding a new association.

The association can also be removed from the Summary page of the logical device.

To remove a logical device association from a media stream:

  1. Open the Media Stream Summary page of a media stream from which you want to remove a logical device association.

  2. In the Granted by Logical Devices section, select the logical device that you want to unassociate from the media stream.

  3. Click Delete.

The association is removed and the link to the logical device is removed from the Granted by Logical Devices section.

Media Stream - New Page

You use the Media Stream - New page to create new media streams.

Note:

The fields that appear on this page are determined by the specification used to create the entity. The specification is created in Design Studio. The fields in the following table are common to most specifications of this type.

Field Description

Specification

Select the Media Stream specification that you want to use for the entities you create.

A media stream represents content such as audio or video media delivered over cable, satellite, radio, or streaming IP.

See UIM Concepts for more information about media streams.

ID

If the entity specification requires a manually entered ID, enter a unique ID for the entity.

Most entity specifications are defined in Design Studio so that IDs are generated automatically. The ID field for these specifications contains the text AUTOGENERATE.

Name

Enter a name for the media stream.

Description

Enter a description of the media stream.

Inventory Status

Displays the stage in the life cycle of the media stream. This field is read only.

See UIM Concepts for more information about inventory statuses.

Assignment Status

Displays the stage in the life cycle of a specific assignment of the media stream to another entity. This field is read only.

See UIM Concepts for more information about assignment statuses.

Media Stream - Information Page

You use the Media Stream - Information page to edit the information that appears in the Summary page Information section. Some data elements, such as the ID, cannot be changed after the entity is created.

Note:

The fields that appear on this page are determined by the specification used to create the entity. The specification is created in Design Studio. The fields in the following table are common to most specifications of this type.

Field Description

Specification

Displays the specification used to define the media stream. This field is read only.

ID

Displays the ID generated or entered when the entity was created. This field is read only.

Name

Edit the name for the media stream.

Description

Edit the description of the media stream.

Media Stream Summary Page

You use the Media Stream Summary page to define the content for a Media Stream entity.

See the following topics for more information about summary pages:

Note:

The sections listed in the following table are specific to the Media Stream Summary page. See "Entity Summary Page" for information about Summary page fields that are common among all entities.

Section Description

Information

Displays basic information about the entity, most of which was defined when you created the entity. Click Edit to change this information. Some data elements, such as the ID, cannot be changed after the entity is created. See "Creating Entities" and "Media Stream - New Page" for more information.

Granted by Logical Devices

Displays any logical devices with which the media stream is associated.
