Create, Edit, and Review a Storm Model

As a storm approaches your service territory, you can create a new Storm Model that estimates when the storm will enter and exit the area, how many customers will lose power, and which zones the storm will impact. After you create a Storm Model, you can also edit Storm Model details and add one or more Estimated Restoration Timelines (ERTs) to the model.

Create a Storm Model

  1. Sign into Oracle Utilities Analytics Insights.
  2. Click Explore, Storm and then ERT.
  3. Click Create Storm Model.
  4. On the Create Storm Model page, complete the following fields; you can edit this information later if necessary.
    • Name: A distinct name for the Storm Model. For example, Sally December 2022, which contains the month and year of the storm.
    • Storm Start Date: The date and time when the storm will enter your service territory.
    • Storm Cut-Off Date: The date and time after which new outages will be excluded from the Storm Model. This is usually the date and time when the storm leaves your service territory. However, you may want to set the cut-off date and time to a time later than when the storm left the territory. For example, if a storm leaves the area at 2 a.m., you may want to set the Storm Cut-Off Date and time to a time later in the morning, such as 11 a.m., on the same day. This way, any outages due to the storm, reported by customers when they wake up in the morning will be included in the Storm Model.
    • Estimated Customers: The estimated number of customers who may lose power. You can use similar storms that occurred in the past to get this number. For example, if the upcoming storm has severity and size characteristics similar to a storm in the past, then you can use your knowledge of that storm to enter your estimate.
    • Estimated Outages: The estimated number of outages that may occur. Base this number on similar storms that have occurred in the past. For example, if the upcoming storm has severity and size characteristics similar to a storm in the past, then you can use your knowledge of that storm to enter your estimate.

Note: The Estimated Outages should be different (usually lower) than Estimated Customers who lose power. Multiple customers can live in a household or location that experiences an outage.

    • Exclude Single Customer: Option to ignore any outages that only affected a single customer rather than multiple customers simultaneously. It is recommended that you select this option in cases where you want to exclude outliers that might skew the results of the Storm Model forecast.
  1. Click Continue and select one or more zones in your service territory that will be affected by the storm based on the forecasted path of the storm. If your utility has multiple operating companies, you may be able to select sub-zones within a larger zone; click Continue.
  2. Select any similar Storm Events from the list and then click Continue.
  3. Complete the required fields to add a new ERT (if you do not want to create a ERT at this time, you can click Cancel; your Storm Model will be saved as a Draft and you can add an ERT later) and then click Create Storm Model. This will change the state of the Storm Model to Draft.

Review a Storm Model

After a Storm Model has been created and one or more ERTs have been added to it, you may want to ask one of your colleagues to review the Storm Model and ERTs, or one of your colleagues may ask you to review a Storm Model and ERTs they created.

  1. Sign into Oracle Utilities Analytics Insights.
  2. Click Explore, Storm and then ERT. The Storm ERT dashboard displays.
  3. Search for and click the name of the Storm Model you want to review.
  4. Review the Storm Model and ERT information. If necessary, switch between the Burnup and Burndown chart views, and use the check boxes in the View panel to show or hide the different layers of data. See View a Storm Model or Storm Event or Create and Edit an ERT in a Storm Model for detailed guidance about ERTs and the meaning of the items in the panel.
