Construction Work Activities

Construction work activities (CWAs) manage construction work, typically involving compatible units (such as installing, removing, or maintaining a compatible unit). CWAs manage the creation of new assets resulting from construction, construction related repairs, or maintenance and can be created from a work design, work order, construction work order (CWO), template construction work order, or can be created directly.

CWAs and CWAs from a template construction work order can be added to construction work orders in a non-final state directly from the Construction Work Order Activity Info zone (Note that the construction work order will transition back to a Planning status when new activities are added). To add an activity, select the Add Activity or Add Activity(s) From Template Construction Work Order hyperlinks to open a dialogue and make an activity type selection and populate activity details.

CWAs can also be moved between construction work orders (CWOs) as long as the CWA is in a Planning status and the new CWO is in either a Planning, Approved, or Active status. As a result of the move, the status of the new CWO will revert to a "Planned" status and current workflow processing occurs.

A construction work activity is derived from an activity type that is shared between the activity classes (Field Activity, Work Activity, and Construction Work Activity) and used to control the purpose and configuration of the activity. A setting unique to both work activities and construction work activities is the “Construction Related” flag on the activity type BO which determines whether the activity is to be a construction work activity. Every construction work activity must reference a service class to identify whether or not the activity is an “overhead” activity or an activity used for construction. Overhead activities are created to collect direct overhead costs for planner time, easements, permits, and so on that are associated with the work design and construction work order. Costs are allocated between the offsetting cost centers as determined by the Work Management Master Configuration, either cost adjustments, ODCs, as well as on the Overhead record. Construction work in progress (WIP) cost center on the service class is defaulted to the activity.

Overhead Construction Work Activity

“Overhead” activities are another type of construction work activity that can also be created from a work design, work order, template construction work order, or directly form the application. Overhead activities are create to collect direct overhead costs associated with the work design and construction work order, such as planner time, easements, and permits. At closeout, the financial transactions are created to allocate those costs across the actual construction activities based on actual construction costs as well as any estimated costs associated with other non-overhead CWAs. Cost adjustments created from the reconciliation process are immediately posted to the system.

  • Settings within the Work Management Master Configuration determine how direct overhead costs for the construction work activities create as a result of the closeout process; either as a cost adjustment or as an Other Direct Charge (ODC). Define one field or the other, but not both.
  • Cost Adjustment Type For Direct Overhead setting in the Work Management Master Configuration must be populated with a cost adjustment type to enable the cost adjustments to create once the work order activity is closed.
  • Miscellaneous Resource Type for Direct Overhead setting must be populated with a resource type to enable other direct charges (ODC) to create once the work order activity is closed. The referenced resource type should include a Resource Source value of Internal, a Default Values to Activity value of Yes, and a Fixed Unit Price value of No.

Construction work Activity Dependencies

Construction work activities can be dependent on other activities on the work order. For example, Activity 2 cannot start until Activity 1 is completed and Activity 3 needs to start when Activity 2 is started. The Activity Dependency zone on the current activity record displays the dependent activities, their Timing and Resource Options, and their Minimum and Maximum Offsets.

Construction Locations

Each construction work activity references one or many construction locations which have one or more compatible units which define the work and resources needed at the location. A user can select one or more CUs and add them all at one time for each selected location.
