Examples for Checks Carried Over, Checks Begun, Checks Paid, and Outstanding Checks

One Day Selection (1/1/2000)

Scenario 1 Assumptions

  • One check was left open on 12/31/1999 and closed on 1/1/2000.

  • This was the only check left open on 1/1/2000.

  • 100 checks begun each day.

Scenario 2 Assumptions

  • One check was left open on 12/31/1999 and closed on 1/1/2000.

  • 100 checks begun each day.

Note:

In this example, based on the assumptions, the carried over check to the selected day, and the one still open at the end of the selected day are the same check. This may not be obvious by just looking at the numbers. The carried over check could have been closed on 1/1/2000 and another one left open on the same day so the total counts would look the same.

One Week Selection (1/1/2000–1/7/2000)

Scenario 3 Assumptions

  • One check was left open on 12/31/1999 and closed on 1/2/2000.

  • This was the only check left open for the selected date range

  • 100 checks begun each day.

Scenario 4 Assumptions

  • One check was left open on 12/31/1999 and closed on 1/8/2000.

  • 100 checks begun each day.

Note:

In this example, based on the assumptions, the carried over check to the first selected day, and the one still open at the end of the selected range are the same check. This may not be obvious by just looking at the numbers. The carried over check could have been closed on 1/1/2000 and another one left open on the same day so the total counts would look the same.

Scenario 5 Assumptions

  • One check was left open on 12/31/1999 and closed on 1/2/2000.

  • Another check was left open on 1/3/2000 and closed on 1/4/2000.

  • Another check was left open on 1/7/2000 (the last selected date).

  • 100 checks begun each day.

Note:

In this case, the carried over check on the first day of the week, and the one still open at the end of the week are not the same check.

Last Four Saturdays Selection (1/1, 1/8, 1/15, 1/22)

Scenario 6 Assumptions

  • One check was left open on 12/31/1999 and closed on 1/23/2000.

  • Ten checks were left open on 1/2/2000 and all were closed on 1/23/2000.

  • 100 checks begun each day.

Note:

This example shows the problem that arises when selecting non-sequential dates. The 11 checks (1 that was carried over from 12/31/1999 and 10 carried over from 1/2/2000) that are still open on 1/22/2000 cannot be covered correctly, because 1/2/2000 is not part of the selection.
