7 Networks

This chapter provides contextual information that supplements information in Oracle Networking Expectations.

A computer network is a group of computers that use common communication protocols over digital connections to share resources located on or provided by the network nodes.

Simphony is installed in wired, wireless, and hybrid networks.

Wired network design is a critical component of Point-of-Sale (POS) sites. Wired networks use cables to connect communication devices such as switches and routers, ensuring that customer transactions are successfully transmitted from workstations to the server and that updates in the server’s database are delivered to the workstations.

A wired network offers the following benefits:
  • Faster data speed
  • Less interference
  • The ability to connect devices over longer distances
  • Increased security
  • Greater control over device connections
