Note:

Create VM Clusters on a Single VM for Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exascale Infrastructure

Introduction

Users can create virtual machine (VM) clusters on a single VM for Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exascale Infrastructure. This feature is intended for Exadata cloud customers who would like to run single-instance workloads on Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exascale Infrastructure and cannot run them in a multi-node VM cluster due to licensing requirements or customer preferences.

Note: Prior to the release of this feature, all VM clusters required a minimum of two VMs, and databases running in those VM clusters were all multi-node Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) databases.

Objectives

Task 1: Create a VM Cluster on a Single VM for Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exascale Infrastructure

  1. Log in to the OCI Console, navigate to Oracle Database and click Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exascale Infrastructure.

  2. Select Region and Compartment. Click VM Clusters and Create VM Cluster.

  3. In the Create VM Cluster page, enter the required information to configure the VM cluster.

In the Configure the VM Cluster section, select 1 for the Number of VMs in the cluster.

  4. Proceed to complete the required information to configure the VM cluster and click Create VM Cluster.

Note: Although only a single VM is deployed, it will still be running all the Oracle RAC components and have the usual Oracle RAC networking setup.

  5. In the VM Cluster Details page, under Resources, click Virtual Machines. The number of virtual machines is displayed as 1.

Task 2: Scale Down an Existing Two VM Cluster to a Single VM Cluster

An existing multi-node VM cluster can be scaled down to a single VM cluster by removing the unwanted VM(s) from the cluster.

  1. Navigate to the VM cluster you wish to convert into a single VM cluster.

  2. In the VM Cluster Details page. Under Resources, click Virtual Machines.

  3. In the list of virtual machines, click the three dots on the row corresponding to the VM you want to remove and select Remove.

  4. Enter the name of the VM to confirm removal and click Remove.

The virtual machine state changes to the status of Terminating.

Repeat steps to remove any additional VMs until only one VM remains in the VM cluster.

Note: Additional VMs can be easily added back later to scale back to a multiple VM cluster, if needed.
