Install the On-Premises HCX Connector

If you don’t have HCX deployed in your on-premises VMware environment, then download the HCX connector open virtualization appliance (OVA) from an Oracle Cloud VMware Solution environment and deploy it in an on-premises VMware environment. After installing the connector, you need to create an on-premises compute profile in that connector.

Note:

The following procedures assume you've already configured FastConnect between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and the on-premises data center and established all required network configurations between Oracle Cloud VMware Solution environment and on-premises VMware environment.

Review Key Considerations and Assumptions

This section describes prerequisites and key considerations for setting up VMware HCX.

Consider the following information for HCX implementation:
  • The Oracle Cloud VMware Solution-supported implementation is restricted only for a vSphere type of deployment and not a Cloud type of deployment. This means that the HCX implementation has the type vSphere for both the source and the destination.
  • Users should have required knowledge for and be familiar with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services and VMware vSphere, NSX, and HCX.
  • High-speed connectivity is established between on-premises and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution through a FastConnect dedicated link.

Install the Connector

Follow these steps to install the HCX connector.

  1. Log into the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution HCX Manager using the IP address found on the SDDC Details page.
  2. Log in using the administrator@vsphere.local vCenter SSO account.
  3. In the Administration section, click System Updates.
  4. Click Check for Updates under Local HCX.
  5. Once the check completes, click Request Download Link.
  6. Do one of the following:
    • To download the HCX connector OVA file, click on VMware HCX.
    • To download the HCX connector by copying the URL and then pasting it into the on-premises environment OVA file, click COPY LINK.
  7. Copy the downloaded OVA file to a location accessible from an on-premises machine.
  8. Deploy the OVA to the on-premises vCenter server. This task is beyond the scope of this Playbook. For instructions, see "Deploying the Installer OVA in the vSphere Client" in the VMware’s User Guide, referenced in the "Before You Begin" topic, elsewhere in this Playbook.
  9. In your on-premises vCenter server, navigate and power on your HCX connector.
  10. Copy the HCX On-premises connector activation key from the SDDC details page.
  11. Activate and configure the HCX connector. This task is beyond the scope of this Playbook. For instructions, see "Activating and Configuring HCX" in the VMware’s User Guide, referenced in the "Before You Begin" topic, elsewhere in this Playbook.
