Learn About Migrating Applications Using HCX

Now that all the implementation and configuration steps are complete, we can test and validate the migration of workloads from on premises to Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. The preceding network extension step ensures that the connectivity is successfully established between sites. It’s important to check the status of appliances and network extensions before performing migrations.

Each VM participating in vMotion or bulk migration requires its network port group to be extended before you start the migration.

Migrate a VM Using vMotion

Migrate third-party applications using vMotion.

  1. Log in to the on-premises vCenter Server. From the Menu, select HCX, Services, and then Migration.
  2. Click Migrate.
  3. Enter a group name, and then select the VM to migrate from the source inventory. Click Add.
  4. Under Transfer and Placement, select mandatory options such as the destination compute container and destination storage. For the migration profile, select vMotion.
Optionally, you can select Switchover Schedule to schedule the migration.
  5. Under VM for Migration, verify the required network adapter mapping. You can choose a different network adapter mapping for the VM. Modify the Network Adapter 1/n value to connect to different port groups from the destination site. Optionally, you can also provide the IP address of the new network.
  6. Click Validate. Ensure that the validation is successful and no errors occur.
  7. Click Go to initiate the migration and monitor the status.
After the successful switchover operation, your VM will be running from Oracle Cloud VMware Solution software-defined data center.

Migrate VMs Using Bulk Migration

Migrate third-party applications using Bulk Migration.

For the migration profile, select Bulk Migration.
Optionally, you can select Switchover Schedule to schedule the migration.
  5. Under VM for Migration, verify the required network adapter mapping for each VM in the bulk migration. You can change the network mapping of the VMs’ network adapter to a different network in the destination.
