Applications Overview

An application is a type of computer program that enables you to perform a particular task. You can use applications to perform one of the following tasks:

  • Create text documents such as letters or reports

  • Work with spreadsheets

  • Listen to music

  • Browse the Internet

  • Create, edit, or view images and videos

To perform each of these tasks, you use a different application.

To start an application, open the Applications menu and choose the application you want to start from the submenus. For more information about starting an application, see About the Applications Menu.

The following table describes the applications that exist on the Oracle Solaris Desktop.

Application
Description
Gedit Text Editor
Reads, creates, or modifies simple text without any formatting.
Dictionary
Enables you to search definitions of a word.
Image Viewer
Displays single image files and image collections.
Character Map
Enables you to choose letters and symbols from the Unicode character set and paste them to any application.
Nautilus File Manager
Displays folders and their contents. You can use this application to copy, move, classify your files. The application also enables you to access CDs, USB flash drives, and other removable media.
Terminal
Enables access to the system command line.

Further standard desktop applications include games, music and video players, a web browser, software accessibility tools, and utilities to manage the system.
