New Features and Changes

This section describes the new features added and the changes made since the last release.

  • Accessing Business Transaction Management from the Enterprise Manager console.

You can register a Business Transaction Management system with Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, and you can create a Business Application that includes one or more transactions. You can then monitor transaction performance using the Enterprise Manager console. For more information, see Getting Started with Fusion Middleware Management.

  • Support for Execution Context ID (ECID) information and access to the Request Instance Diagnostics view.

An ECID is a globally unique identifier for tracking a request into the Oracle technology stack. The association of ECIDs with Business Transaction Management messages allows you to access the Request Instance Diagnostics page where you can view a list of the JVMs through which request steps with the specified ECID executed. You can also use the Message Log Search tool to search for messages with a given ECID. For more information, see Accessing Other Diagnostic Tools.

  • The introduction of a universal observer for the WebLogic 10.3 server.

In previous releases, a variety of observers were provided for installing into WebLogic 10.3 servers. Each type of observer contained a set of probes that gave it the ability to monitor a particular set of component types. For example, the JavaEE observer contained probes for monitoring JavaEE components and the SOA observer contained probes for monitoring SOA components. In the current release, a single "universal" observer is provided for installing into WebLogic 10.3 servers. This universal observer contains a superset of all the probes contained in the older observers, making it capable of monitoring the superset of component types that were previously monitored. For more information, see Business Transaction Management Installation Guide.

  • Change in support for limiting discovery.

When installing probes for technologies that use intermediate endpoints, Business Transaction Management allows you to specify whether you want to monitor all endpoints or just the endpoints at the edge of such systems; often these are the endpoints that directly represent the business services of interest. By default, the monitoring of intermediary endpoints is now turned off. This improves monitoring performance and eliminates data that is not essential to monitoring your distributed applications. Support for limiting discovery is now provided for SOA, OSB, and EJB probes. For more information, see Limiting Discovery.

  • Documentation for migrating Business Transaction Management between environments. For information, see Migrating Data.

  • New security options for the observer-monitor connection.

SSL is now enabled by default on the observer-monitor socket connection used for sending observation messages. Observer authentication has also been added for that same socket connection and is enabled by default. For more information, see Business Transaction Management Installation Guide.

  • The addition of the Oracle Enterprise Gateway (OEG) observer. For more information, see Business Transaction Management Installation Guide.

  • Deploying central servers and monitors on WebSphere is no longer supported.
