Installing and Uninstalling BEA SNMP Agent on a Windows NT Platform

This chapter explains how to install and uninstall BEA SNMP Agent on a Windows NT platform in these sections:

Installing BEA SNMP Agent on Windows NT

Follow this procedure to install BEA SNMP Agent on your Windows NT platform:

  1. Make sure your system meets or exceeds the requirements listed in the BEA SNMP Agent Release Notes for BEA Tuxedo and BEA WebLogic Enterprise.

The installation program scans your hard disk looking for installed versions of Tuxedo and WebLogic Enterprise. If neither product is installed, the installation program displays an error message and stops.

  2. If multiple versions of BEA Tuxedo or BEA WebLogic Enterprise are installed, you are prompted to choose with which version you want to install BEA SNMP Agent; you can install it with as many versions of BEA Tuxedo and BEA WebLogic Enterprise as are installed if desired.

  3. Some attributes of Tuxedo resources are accessible globally (no matter which Tuxedo node they are on) while others are accessible only by an SNMP agent local to the same machine. To access managed objects that are only accessible locally, you must install Tuxedo SNMP agents on each machine where these resources reside.

  4. To monitor multiple Tuxedo or WLE domains you can run multiple SNMP agents on the same node. Each agent can monitor only one domain. To monitor multiple domains you must have the BEA SNMP Agent Integrator running and the agents must be started as subagents. See the BEA SNMP Agent Administrator's Guide for BEA Tuxedo and BEA WebLogic Enterprise for more information.

  5. The installation program for Windows NT installs the BEA SNMP Agent as two Windows NT services. If you want to run multiple instances of the BEA SNMP Agent to monitor multiple Tuxedo or WLE domains, you need to install additional Windows NT services for the additional agents.

  6. Obtain a license file.

Call or email BEA Customer Support to request a license file for BEA SNMP Agent.

  7. To enable the product license, have your BEA SNMP license available during installation of the BEA SNMP Agent product.

  8. Exit all Windows programs.

  9. Insert the BEA SNMP Agent CD in the CR-ROM drive and use Windows Explorer to navigate to the inwnt40 directory.

  10. Double-click the setup.exe file icon.

If you have installed more than one version of Tuxedo and/or WebLogic Enterprise, the installation program displays the Select Components screen, listing the versions of Tuxedo and WLE that you have installed. (If you installed only one version of Tuxedo or WLE, this screen is not displayed.)

  11. Select the version of Tuxedo or WLE where you want the BEA SNMP Agent to be installed and then click Next.

The installation program displays the Welcome screen.

  12. Click Next.

The installation program displays the Software License Agreement screen.

  13. Read the Software License Agreement and click Yes.

The installation program displays the Choose Destination Location screen.

It is recommended that you DO install the BEA SNMP Agent in the default destination folder. If you do not do so, you could have problems with the license file and configuring the application. To select the default destination folder, click Next.

If you do not want to install the BEA SNMP Agent in the default destination folder, click Browse. The Choose Folder screen is displayed.

  14. Choose the desired installation location, and then click OK. The Question dialog is displayed.

  15. Click Yes.

The installation program proceeds to extract, uncompress, and install the BEA SNMP Agent files. This installs the BEA SNMP Agent as two services. One is the snmp_integrator. The other is given one of the following names based on which version of Tuxedo or WLE you installed:

    tux64_snmpd

    tux65_snmpd

    tux71_snmpd

    wle42_snmpd

    wle51_snmpd

You can check to make sure that these services are registered as NT services. Select Start-Settings-Control Panel-Services and scroll the list of services until you find these two on the list. Here is an example of what you should see:

Note: If you click No and attempt to install the BEA SNMP Agent manually as two Windows services, or attempt to run the BEA SNMP Agent from its executable files, the result is unpredictable and, thus, not recommended.

Caution: If more than one version of Tuxedo or WLE is installed on the same machine, and one of these versions is then uninstalled, you must re-register snmp_integrator as a Windows NT service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt:

    instsrv service-name [executable-file | remove]

For example, if one of your BEA SNMP Agents is installed in C:\tux71\, the command is:

    instsrv snmp_integrator c:\tux71\bin\snmp_integrator.exe

When the installation program has finished installing the two services, the Question dialog is displayed.

  16. Click Yes to continue.

The installation program displays the Insert License Disk dialog.

Note: If you click No, an error message displays, the installation program stops, and the BEA SNMP Agent is not completely installed.

  17. Click Browse.

The Choose Folder screen is displayed.

Navigate to the directory that contains the SNMP Agent license file that you obtained in Step 6, and then click OK.

  18. The license is installed, and then the Information dialog is displayed.

  19. Click OK.

The Setup Complete dialog is displayed.

  20. Click OK. Your setup procedure is now complete.

  21. The BEA SNMP Agent CD includes online documentation in the doc directory. You can copy this directory to your local hard drive.

To view the online documentation in a Web browser, open doc\html\index.htm.

  22. If you do not have a Web browser, you can view the PDF files, which are located in doc/pdf.

To view the PDF files, you need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this program, you can get it for free from the Adobe Web site at http://www.adobe.com or contact your local Adobe sales office.

  23. See the BEA SNMP Agent Administrator's Guide for BEA Tuxedo and BEA WebLogic Enterprise for information on configuration, and on starting the BEA SNMP Agent and the optional BEA SNMP Agent Integrator.

  4. Click OK when the uninstallation is complete.
