This appendix describes how to install MessageQ MQSeries Connection. Specifically, it covers the following installation tasks:

Installation Prerequisites

This topic describes the preparations you must make before trying to install MessageQ MQSeries Connection. To ensure that the installation runs smoothly, complete the following preparation requirements:

Use the bill of materials (BOM) to check the contents of your software distribution kit. The kit contains the following items:

Installation Requirements

MessageQ MQSeries Connection requires that you meet specific hardware and software configurations before installation. The following topics describe the hardware and software requirements.

MessageQ MQSeries Connection requires 3.7 MB of disk space to install the software.

MessageQ MQSeries Connection requires that the following software be installed on your hardware system:

Backing Up Your System

We recommend that you back up your system disk before installing any software. For details on performing a system disk backup, see your operating system documentation.

Installing the Release Notes

We recommend that you install and read the release notes before you install the MessageQ MQSeries Connection software. To install the release notes, follow the installation procedure as described in the Installation Procedure topic. When you are prompted to enter a subset choice, make sure that you select the release note subset.

Overview of Installation Options

The MessageQ installation dialogs display a list of options that let you choose which subsets to install. For this version of the MessageQ MQSeries Connection, there are two subsets to install. One subset contains all the software, help, and programming examples that you need to run MessageQ MQSeries Connection. The second subset contains the release notes.

The subsets of the MessageQ MQSeries Connection installation are installed on licensed systems targeted for MessageQ MQSeries Connection application development.

Installation Procedure

A typical installation on a system takes between 5 and 10 minutes, depending on the system configuration. An installation performed over a network may take longer. If the network is not active, you should expect an installation time roughly equal to a local installation.

Stopping the Installation

You can stop the installation procedure at any time by using the terminal interrupt key sequence for your operating system. See the documentation for your operating system for a description of the interrupt key.

When you interrupt the installation, any files and links created up to that point are not automatically deleted-you must manually delete these files.

Installing MessageQ MQSeries Connection

To install the MessageQ MQSeries Connection from your CD-ROM, follow these steps:

  1. Log into the system as superuser and change the default directory to a directory with enough space to store the installation files. For example: 

    # cd /mnt/mydisk

    In this example, /mnt/mydisk is the name of the directory in which you want to store the installation files.

  2. Mount the CD-ROM media using the following platform-specific syntax where:

  3. Copy the installation files from the distribution media using the tar utility, as follows: 

    # tar -xvf /device_name/directory/filename.tar

    where device_name is the name of the device from which you are installing the media kit and filename.tar is the name of the tar file that you have selected to install. Use the proper case for entering the file specification.

    Note: You must install the MQSeries Connection tar file that matches the version of the MessageQ Server running in your environment, as shown below:

    MessageQ V4.0A

    For example, a full specification could read as follows on HP-UX: 

    # tar -xvf /mnt/CD-ROM/MQSC/HP-UX/V32B.TAR\;1

    A full specification could read as follows on AIX: 

    # tar -xvf /mnt/CD-ROM/mqsc/aix/v32b.tar

    Note that the backslash (\) character at the end of the line is required on some platforms to escape the semicolon (;) character.

  4. The system displays a list of files as they are transferred from the distribution media to disk. The display on your screen may look something like the following: 

    # tar -xvf /mnt/CD-ROM/mqsc/aix/v32b.tar

  5. The setld portable installation utility simplifies the installation of MessageQ MQSeries Connection. Change the directory to the location where the installation files are stored and use setld to install MessageQ MQSeries Connection, as follows: 

    # /etc/setld -l output_dmc

  6. Enter the option number of the subsets you want to install. To install more than one subset on your system, enter the number of each option separated by a space. For example, you will receive a display similar to the following: 

    *** Enter Subset Selections ***

    The subsets listed below are optional:
    1) BEA MessageQ MQSeries Connection  2) BEA MessageQ MQSeries Release Notes

    3) All of the Above
    4) None of the Above
    5) Exit without installing subsets

    Enter your choice(s): 3

  7. Enter a y if you have correctly selected the subsets you want to install. The installation procedure proceeds from this point without user interaction. 

    You are installing the following subsets:

    Symbolic links required by MessageQ MQSeries Connection are created in /usr/bin and /usr/include. Once MessageQ MQSeries Connection is installed, see the Postinstallation Tasks topic.

Recovering from Errors During Installation

If errors occur during the MessageQ MQSeries Connection installation procedure, recheck your preinstallation steps to ensure that the correct versions of prerequisite software have been installed. Errors can occur during the installation if the following conditions exist:

Displaying Installed Subsets

You can display a list of installed MessageQ and MessageQ MQSeries Connection subsets by entering the following command: 

# /etc/setld -i

The status display for the installation subsets will look similar to Listing A-1.

This listing will show corrupted subsets if an error occurred during installation. If a MessageQ MQSeries Connection subset is corrupt, delete that subset by following the instructions in the Deleting Subset Options topic. Then reinstall the subset.

Deleting Subset Options

To delete a subset and its associated files and symbolic links, enter the following command: 

# setld -d subset_name

In this example, the subset_name is the name of the subset you want to delete. For example, to delete the MessageQ MQSeries Connection subset, enter the following command: 

# setld -d DMQDMC32B

Deleting Files Extracted from the Media

After MessageQ MQSeries Connection has been successfully installed, delete the contents of the /output_dmc directory containing the files that you extracted from the media.

To delete the files in the /output_dmc directory, enter the following command: 

# rm -r output_dmc
