Preparing For Installation
|
This chapter contains information you should review before you install the Sun Java System RFID Software. Three separate installer wizards are used to install the RFID Software. Use of the wizards is described in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.
The following sections are included in this chapter:
Overview of the Installation Process
Outlined here are the general steps involved in the installation of the Sun Java System RFID Software suite.
1. Get the product CDs or download and unzip the software from the product web site. You can find the download files at: http://www.sun.com/software/solutions/rfid.
2. Install the Java RFID System Event Manager software, see Installing the Event Manager.
3. (Optional) Install the Management Console, see Installing the RFID Management Console.
4. Install the Information Server software, see Installing RFID Information Server.
5. Verify the installation of the software by starting the RFID software components.
Planning for Installation
To properly plan your installation, review the following sections.
- Verify that your machine is a supported platform, see TABLE 2-1.
- Verify that you have the required supporting software, see Additional Required Software.
- Decide what you are going to install, seeSelecting What to Install.
- Uninstall previously installed version of the RFID software, see Sun Java System 1.0 RFID Software Installation Guide for information on uninstalling version 1.0 software.

Additional Required Software
- Java 2 Standard Edition, version 1.4.2
- To install the ALE Web Service or the RFID Information Server, one of the following supported application servers must be installed and running:
- Sun Java System Application Server 7, Standard Edition
- Sun Java System Application Server 8.1, Standard Edition
- BEA WebLogic Server 8.1
- To install ALE Web Service, the RFID Management Console, or the RFID Information Server, one of the following supported databases must be installed:
- Oracle Database 8.1.7
- Oracle Database 10g
- PostgreSQL 7.4.6
You need to know the admin user, admin password, and port number for the application server that you plan to use for your RFID software deployment.
You need to know the user name and password to connect to the database that you plan to use for your RFID software deployment. You also the port number and the database name (for PostgreSQL) or Oracle SID (for Oracle database).
Supported Software Platforms
Sun Java System RFID Software is supported on several operating system (OS) platforms, application servers and databases. The support matrix is shown in TABLE 2-2.

Selecting What to Install
Install Event Manager to gather, filter, and route the RFID reader information.
Install Information Server to capture and store the tag observation data gathered by the Event Manager.
Install Management Console to manage your readers and event manager from a web browser.
Install ALE Web Service to get tag event reports.
