9 LED Harness Assembly

This chapter describes how to remove and replace the LED harness assembly in a DSM with a disk drive in it. The DSM with a disk drive has a separate LED harness assembly, which is not part of the disk drive. This LED is powered by the power supply. Replace the LED harness assembly when a LED in a DSM with a disk drive is defective.

In a DSM with a tape drive, the LED is part of the tape drive and is powered by the tape drive. When a LED in a DSM with a tape drive is defective, the tape drive needs to be replaced to have the LED function again. It is up to the owner to have the tape drive replaced. See Chapter 6 for information on removing and replacing a tape drive.

Removing a LED Harness Assembly

Follow Chapter 4 to select tools needed, turn off your system, disconnect the Desktop Storage Module, remove the cover, and attach the wrist strap.

Caution -

Do not disconnect the power cord from the power outlet of the system unit or from the wall outlet. This connection provides the ground path necessary for the drive.

Make sure that the power of the system unit is turned off by checking that the green light-emitting diode (LED) at the front of the chassis is not lit and that the fan is not running.

To remove a LED harness assembly, do the following:

    1. Remove the disk drive. Refer to Chapter 5 "Removing a Disk Drive Assembly."
    2. Detach your wrist strap and unplug the power cord connected to the DSM from the wall outlet.
    3. Disconnect the connector of the LED harness assembly from the power supply cable connector.

    See Figure 9-1.

    4. Hold the cables of the LED harness assembly and pull the assembly up away from the chassis.

Replacing a LED Harness Assembly

To replace the LED harness assembly, do the following:

    1. Hold the LED harness assembly by the cables close to the LED, with the LED pointing into the LED socket.

    See the following figure.

    Figure 9-1 LED Harness Assembly

    2. Push the LED into its socket until it clicks.
    3. Connect the connector of LED harness assembly to the power supply cable connector.
    4. Replace the disk drive.

See "Replacing a Disk Drive" in Chapter 5.
