The video display monitor for the SPARCstation 10 system connects to a frame buffer on an SBus card. How you connect the monitor to the system depends on the type of monitor and frame buffer card (if any) that you have ordered.
This appendix contains reference information about monitors used with the SPARCstation 10 system, including:
Your SPARCstation 10 system is shipped with a Sun video display monitor. Each monitor is shipped with its own manual. Each monitor requires a frame buffer, as described in the next section.
A frame buffer lets a system output be displayed on a video display monitor. Color and monochrome frame buffers are available on optional SBus cards that plug into the SBus slots in the system unit. See Figure C-1.
Figure C-1 SBus Frame Buffer Card
A color monitor must be plugged into a color frame buffer. Color frame buffers are available as SBus cards. If you add a color frame buffer card at another time, you need to install it according to the installation instructions in the documents packed with the card.
A grayscale monitor can be plugged into either a monochrome or a color frame buffer. If you plug a grayscale monitor into a monochrome frame buffer, the monitor grayscale capabilities are not used. To use its grayscale capabilities, you must plug a grayscale monitor into a color frame buffer.
For information about selecting an SBus slot and changing the system configuration, refer to the documents that are packed with your specific Sun SBus card.

13W3 ports use a subminiature D-type shell. Plugs contain ten pins and three coaxial cavities. In Figure C-2 pinholes are numbered 1 through 10, and coaxial cavities are numbered A1 to A3.

All current Sun monitors are equipped with a 13W3 input port.
The SPARCstation 10 system conforms with the European ZH1/618 ergonomics standard. Monitors have antiglare protection. For text processing applications, a positive mode display (black characters on a white background) is required.
A German keyboard is required to comply with the keyboard layout requirements of ZH1/618.
To change the monitor connected to the system unit:
See Chapter 5, "When System is Working Normally," for information about halting your system.
The other end of this cable remains connected to the frame buffer connector on the back panel of the system unit.
