The SBus Quad Ethernet Controller (SQEC) card is an add-on option providing four fully buffered twisted-pair Ethernet ports (RJ45) on a single-wide SBus card. SQEC highlights are listed as follows.

1. Fully complies with the following standards:

a. ANSI/IEEE std 802.3 CSMA/CD physical layer specification

i. Supports 10Base-T (twisted-pair) Ethernet. AUI (thicknet) and Coax (thinnet) can be supported via external third-party adapter boxes

ii. 10 Mbit per second transfer rate

iii. Provides operations of up to 100 meters of twisted-pair without use of repeaters

b. SBus specification, Rev B.0

i. Single-wide SBus card

ii. Fully operational across all SBus clock ranges (16.67 - 25 Mhz)

iii. Supports parity

iv. Supports 16/32/64 byte burst

2. Four independent Ethernet channels run at 10 Mbits per second

3. Full packet buffering for transmit and receive packets
64 Kbytes of memory for data

4. Internal self-test (POST) on boot PROM reports status for each port

5. Link integrity LED for each channel
Enabling/disabling link integrity detection is software programmable

Note - Level 2.x boot PROMs (or later) are required for systems using the SQEC card. If lower-level boot PROMs are installed on your system, you must upgrade the boot PROMs before using the SQEC card.

The SQEC card is supported on all SBus based Sun-4c, Sun-4m, and Sun-4d system architectures that run under Solaris® 1.x, revision 1.1 and later and Solaris 2.x, revision 2.3 or later - or other compatible operating systems. To utilize the SQEC card, the system also needs to contain OpenBoot(TM) PROM (OBP) level 2.0 or later. An on-board FCode PROM provides configuration support that identifies the SQEC card to the system and contains selftest routines.
