2 Installation Procedures

This chapter contains instructions for installing the 25 Megabyte/second Fibre Channel SBus (FC25/S) card in a host system.

2.1 Preparing the FC25/S Card

A new FC25/S card has a plastic handle and an adapter plate. For some system types, you must remove both the handle and the plate.

Caution -

Use an antistatic wrist strap and a padded antistatic mat for this installation.

    1. If your system requires the removal of the handle, push the sides of the handle apart until you can slip the ends of the handle out of the holes in the card.

If you do not know if the handle and adapter plate are required, refer to the documentation for your system.

    2. To remove the adapter plate, remove the two Phillips screws shown in Figure 2-2.

2.2 Opening the Cabinet

Refer to your system documentation for specific instructions, and do the following:

    1. Halt the operating system.
    2. Turn off the system AC power switch.

Caution -

Do not unplug the AC cord. The cord provides a grounding path for static electricity.

    3. Open the system cabinet.
    4. For systems such as the SPARCserver(TM) 1000 and SPARCcenter(TM) 2000 systems which have more than one system board, select and remove a system board which has an available SBus slot.

If more than one SBus slot is available, refer to your system documentation for guidelines on selecting a suitable slot.

Note - When removing boards for service, place the board on a padded ESD mat to prevent breakage.

2.3 Installing the FC25/S Card

    1. Install the FC25/S card on the workstation motherboard or on the system board, as appropriate.

Mounting details vary for each system. Refer to your system documentation for specific instructions.

    2. Pull the two dust covers out of the FC25/OM connector.

See Figure 2-3. Save the dust covers for possible future use.

2.4 Closing the Cabinet

For a desktop workstation:
    1. Close the cabinet.
    2. Attach the Fibre Channel cable to the FC25/OM module.

The connectors are keyed to prevent upside-down insertion.

For a server system board:
    1. Install the system board in the card cage.
    2. Route the new Fibre Channel cable into the cabinet, and connect it to the FC25/OM module.

The connectors are keyed to prevent upside-down insertion.

    3. Attach any remaining interface cables to the board.
    4. Where applicable, attach the EMI shield and the cabinet covers.

2.5 Powering Up

    1. Attach the free end of the Fibre Channel cable to the SPARCstorage Array.
    2. Turn on system power.
    3. Boot the operating system.
