Replacing the MBus Module

Removing the MBus Module

Caution -

If your system was operating before you opened it, the MBus module may be hot and can cause personal injury if touched. Avoid contact!

    1. Unlock both MBus module retainers.

    See Figure 3-1.

    Figure 3-1 MBus Module Retainers

Note - If the system has two MBus modules, you must remove both modules.

    2. Install the card extractor on the MBus module.

    See Figure 3-2.

Figure 3-2 Installing the Extractor on the MBus Module

Note - If no card extractor is available, pull up on the edge of the MBus module near the MBus slot.

    3. Hold both sides of the extractor and slowly pull the MBus module up until the connector is out of the slot.

    See Figure 3-3.

Note - If no card extractor is available, pull up on the edge of the MBus module near the MBus slot.

    4. Remove the MBus module extractor from the MBus module.

Save the extractor for future use.

    5. Place the MBus module on an antistatic surface.

Installing the MBus Module

    1. Push the MBus module retainers to the unlocked position.

See Figure 3-4 for retainer locations.

    Figure 3-4 MBus Module Retainers

    2. Position the MBus module so that the MBus connector faces MBus slot 0.

    See Figure 3-5.

Note - MBus slot 0 (the lower MBus slot) must have a module installed or the system will not work.

Figure 3-5 Installing the MBus Module

    3. Insert the back edge of the module between the metal (lower) and plastic (upper) tabs on the back panel.
    4. Hold the corners of the MBus module connector and press down firmly until the module fits into the slot.

Note - Make sure the module is fully inserted into the MBus slot, or the card retainers may not lock properly over the module edge.

Caution -

Excessive force can bend or damage the module pins.

    5. Lock the retainer arms over the edge of the MBus module.

    See Figure 3-6.

Installing the Second Module

The SPARCstation 20 system can operate in multiprocessor mode by using two MBus modules. When two modules are installed, they must be installed in pairs. Operating the system with two dissimilar modules is not supported. You can be sure that two modules are the same if:

Visual Inspection

There are two types of MBus modules to distinguish visually:

See Figure 3-7 for examples of these two types of modules. The key part to look for is the heat sink.

Installation Procedure

The second module is installed in MBus slot 1 (upper slot). Any module already installed in slot 1 must first be removed. See Figure 3-8. See the previous sections of this chapter for procedures that apply to your particular installation:

System Confirmation

After you have installed the upgrade module(s) in their proper slots, you can ask the system to confirm that you have installed a compatible pair of modules. Do the following:

    1. Make sure that power is off to the system.
    2. Power on the system.
    3. Check the banner screen for the number of processors installed.

See Figure 3-9. In Figure 3-9, the "2" in "2 X SuperSPARC-II" indicates the type and number of MBus modules (processors) installed.

Figure 3-9 Banner Screen Showing Two Processors Installed

    4. Abort the auto-boot program by pressing Stop/a.

You then see the ok prompt.

    5. Type the module-info command.

    See Figure 3-10.

    Figure 3-10 Seeking System Confirmation

The system confirms MBus module compatibility by responding with identical MHz and SPARC information for each MBus module (CPU or processor) installed. If it does not, then you have installed incompatible MBus modules. If the system confirms MBus module compatibility, proceed with the next step.

    6. At the ok prompt, type boot.

See Figure 3-10. Your system will be ready to use after the boot program has finished running.

Returning the Removed Module(s)

To return the removed module(s) to Sun Microsystems, Inc., use the shipping box and packing materials for the SuperSPARC-II module(s) and:

    1. Place the removed module(s) in the antistatic bag(s) .
    2. Fold and tape the end(s) of the bag(s).
    3. Place the bag(s) and other shipping materials in the shipping box.
    4. Affix the RMA (Return Material Authorization) label from the upgrade kit onto the shipping carton.
    5. Return the shipping carton to Sun Microsystems, Inc.
