This guide provides detailed information about Oracle Content Server services, which are functions or procedures performed by the Oracle Content Server system. This chapter contains these topics:
Calling an Oracle Content Server service (making a service request) is the only way to communicate with the Oracle Content Server system or access the database. This guide describes service usage and syntax, and provides detailed descriptions and examples of commonly used and predefined Oracle Content Server services.
The information contained in this guide is based on Oracle Content Server 11g Release 1 (11.1.1). The information is subject to change as the product technology evolves and as hardware and operating systems are created and modified. Due to the technical nature of browsers, databases, Web servers, and operating systems, Oracle cannot warrant compatibility with all versions and features of third-party products.

This guide is arranged according to Oracle Content Server functionality or product, making it easier for you to find information about specific services. Services that are used extensively have an extended description. In addition, frequently-used services are marked with an asterisk (*) in introductory lists in each chapter.
This guide is divided into the following chapters:
Chapter 2, "What's New" lists changes to this documentation and to standard Content Server services.
Chapter 3, "Using Services" explains how Oracle Content Server services work and provides examples of how Oracle Content Server services can be called externally from custom applications.
Chapter 4, "Customizing Services" explains the structure of Oracle Content Server services, provides an example of how services, queries, and templates work together, and describes how to create a service resource for use with a custom component.
Chapter 5, "Core Oracle Content Server Services" groups standard Oracle Content Server services by common usage and describes those services.
Chapter 6, "Workflow Services" describes Oracle Content Server workflow service.
Chapter 7, "Archiving Services" describes archiving services used in the Oracle Content Server system.
Chapter 8, "Folders Services" describes the services used with the Folders component.
Chapter 9, "Content Publisher Services" describes services describes services used with the Content Publisher.
Chapter 10, "Universal Record Manager Services" describes services used with the Record Manager optional component.
Appendix A, "Actions" describes the actions used by individual services.
