5. Using the Desktop Applications
You can add buttons to your panels to provide quick access to common actions and functions. This section describes buttons you can add to your panels. For information about how to add an object to a panel, see Adding an Object to a Panel.
The Force Quit button enables you to click a window to force an application to quit. This button is useful if you want to terminate an application that does not respond to your commands, or if the application has crashed or is not responsive.

To terminate an application, click Force Quit, and then click a window from the application that you want to terminate. Press Esc if you do not want to terminate the application.
The Lock Screen button locks the screen and activates the screensaver. To access the session again, you must provide your password.

Right-clicking the Lock Screen button displays a menu of screensaver-related commands. The following table describes the menu options.

Note - Clicking the Lock Screen button locks the screen only if the screensaver is enabled in the Screensaver preference tool. By default, the screensaver is enabled.
The Log Out button enables you to log out of a desktop session or switch to a different user account.

Clicking the Run button displays the Run Application dialog, which enables you to start an application by choosing it from a list.

Clicking the Search for Files button displays the Search Tool, which enables you to search for files on the computer. For more information about the Search Tool, see the Search Tool Manual.

You can use the Show Desktop button to minimize all open windows and show the desktop.
