Turning Off the Library

Caution:

If you shut off power to the library without performing the following procedure, you risk possible equipment damage, cartridge damage, and loss of data.
  1. Ensure all library requests have completed.

  2. Take all library drives offline (see "Taking a Device Offline").

  3. Take the library offline (see "Taking the Library Offline").

  4. Open the rear doors of the Base Module (and DEM if present).

  5. Turn off the power enable switches.

  6. If necessary, turn off the circuit breakers on the PDUs.

Turning On the Library

  1. Open the rear doors of the Base Module (and DEM if present).

  2. If necessary, turn on the circuit breakers on the PDUs.

  3. Turn on the power enable switches.

The library goes through the initialization sequence. If someone opened the access doors while the library was off, the library performs a full audit.

Entering the Library

Note:

Opening the library main door will trigger a full audit when the library comes back online.
  1. Observe all safety precautions (see "Safety Precautions when Entering the Library").

  2. Take all drives offline (see "Taking a Device Offline").

  3. Take the library offline (see "Taking the Library Offline").

  4. Unlock the door.

  5. Pull up on the door latch and open the door.

  6. Before you exit the library, verify that there are no loose items in the library.

  7. Close the door and latch it.

  8. Lock the door and retain the key.

  9. Bring the library online (see "Turning On the Library" and "Bringing the Library Online").

Safety Precautions when Entering the Library

WARNING:

To prevent injury while inside the library, lock the access door open and retain the key.

  • Verify the library is offline. Do not enter the library or move any of the robot mechanisms if you suspect the robots are on.

  • Always leave the access door open while inside the library.

  • Locate the mechanical door releases (yellow handles on the inside of the access doors). If the doors close while inside the library, push the mechanical release to unlock and open the door.

  • Know the physical restrictions. Be careful not to bump your body or snag clothing on the arrays (there is only 0.4 m [18 in.] of aisle clearance).

  • Avoid damaging the robot's mechanical or electronic components when manually moving a robot.

Opening the AEM Access Door

Caution:

Opening the AEM door has the same effects on the library as opening the main library door. It causes an abrupt interruption of library activity and the library will audit the entire library when you shut the AEM door.

This procedure does not lower the internal AEM safety door.

  1. Insert the library access door key in the Deadbolt Override lock and unlock the door. The key cannot be removed from the lock while it is in the unlocked position.

  2. Lift the AEM access door latch and open the door. DO NOT force the AEM access door to open or close.

Power is cut to the robots, all in-process jobs stop, and the library takes the robots and AEM offline.

  3. To close the AEM door, close and latch it. DO NOT force the AEM access door to open or close.

  4. Lock the door and retain the key.

Once the door shuts, the library re-initializes, the robots initialize, the library does a full audit, and the library brings the AEMs online.

Manually Cleaning a Drive

Normally, either the library auto clean feature or the host tape management software manages drive cleaning. However, there may be occasions when you need to perform a manual clean. Refer to the drive manufacturer's documentation for information on whether manual cleaning is allowed.

Caution:

Cleaning a drive before it is due is not recommended. Excessive drive cleaning can wear out a drive head prematurely.
  1. Verify that the drive needs cleaning (see "Viewing Device Status and Properties").

  2. Display a list of cleaning cartridges (see "Viewing Cleaning Cartridge Status"). Verify there is a compatible cleaning cartridge for the drive.

  3. Move a compatible cleaning cartridge from a system slot to the drive that needs cleaning (see "Moving Cartridges (Recovery Moves)").

  4. When the cleaning operation is complete, move the cleaning cartridge from the drive back to a system slot.

Manually Mounting and Dismounting a Cartridge

Refer to the drive documentation before manually mounting a cartridge.

Caution:

Keep your hands clear of the drive's mechanical and electronic load components.
  1. Record the vol-id, cartridge location, and the drive slot location provided by the library management software.

  2. Locate the drive (see "Viewing Library and Device Reports with the Reports Utility").

  3. Locate the cartridge (see "Locating a Cartridge").

  4. Enter the library (see "Entering the Library").

  5. Orient the cartridge so that the hub gear is facing down and the vol-id label is facing you.

  6. Push the cartridge into the drive. Do not force the cartridge into the tape drive. If you feel some resistance as you insert the cartridge, verify you are inserting the correct cartridge type for the drive.

  7. To dismount the drive, press the UNLOAD switch on the front of the drive.

If the cartridge does not eject, refer to the drive documentation.
