4.3 Install the Server in the Rack

With the doors and lacer bar removed, the rack is now ready for the installation of the expansion node. Detailed installation instructions are provided in the following sections.

4.1 Install the Mounting Brackets on the Server

Location: part 1, page 1, pane 4

Pane 4 explains how to attach the mounting brackets on both sides of the server.

Steps:

  1. Install the mounting brackets on the server by placing the bracket against the server with the slide rail lock pointing toward the front and the five keyhole openings aligned with the locating pins on the server.

  2. With the locating pins protruding through the keyhole openings, pull the bracket toward the front of the chassis until the clip locks into place with an audible click.

  3. Verify that the rear locating pin has engaged the mounting bracket clip.

  4. Repeat these steps to install the remaining mounting bracket on the other side of the server.

An image illustrates how the mounting bracket is aligned against the side of the server, matching the location of the locating pins. Two detail bubbles show the locating pins locking the mounting bracket in place when it slides in the direction of the arrows.

4.2 Attach the Slide Rail Assemblies to the Rack

Location: part 1, page 2, pane 5

Pane 5 explains how to attach the slide rail assemblies to the rack rails. The mounting brackets on the server will be inserted into these slide rails later.

Steps:

  1. Orient the slide-rail assembly so that the ball-bearing track is forward and secured in place by the locking mechanism.

An image illustrates the correct orientation of the slide rail assembly. A detail bubble shows a close-up of the front, where the locking mechanism is located. Call-outs identify the ball bearing track and the locking mechanism.

  2. Align the rear of the slide rail assembly against the inside of the rear rack rail, and push until the assembly locks into place with an audible click.

  3. Align the front of the slide rail assembly against the outside of the front rack rail, and push until the assembly locks into place with an audible click.

  4. Repeat these steps to install the remaining slide rail assembly to the other side of the rack.

An image illustrates how the slide rail assembly locks into place on the rack rails. Detail bubbles show close-ups of the front and rear being attached to the respective rack rail.

4.3 Install the Server in the Rack

Location: part 1, page 2, pane 6

Pane 6 explains how to insert the server into the slide rail assemblies and install it in the appropriate position in the rack.

Note

Always populate the compute rack units starting from the bottom most open slot, and work your way up.

Steps:

  1. Push the slide-rails as far as possible into the slide-rail assemblies in the rack.

  2. Position the server so that the rear ends of the mounting brackets are aligned with the slide-rail assemblies that are mounted in the rack.

  3. Insert the mounting brackets into the slide-rails, and then push the server into the rack until the mounting brackets encounter the slide-rail stops (approximately 30 centimeters or 12 inches).

An image illustrates how the server mounting brackets are aligned with the slide rail assemblies. Arrows indicate where the mounting brackets must be inserted. A detail bubble shows a close-up of the front of one of the slide rail assemblies.

  4. Simultaneously push and hold the green slide-rail release buttons on each mounting bracket while you push the server into the rack. Continue pushing the server into the rack until the slide-rail locks (on the front of the mounting brackets) engage the slide-rail assemblies with an audible click.

An image shows the server almost fully inserted into the rack. Detail bubbles show the location of the slide rail release buttons and slide-rail locks, which are also identified by call-outs. As the arrows indicate, you must push the slide rail release buttons and slide the server into the rack.
