Work Permits and Age Certificates

Some jurisdictions require a work permit, an age certificate, or both for each minor that is employed. Although work permits and age certificates vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, generally they are issued by a representative of the local government, such as a school official, high school guidance counselor, and so on. These permits and certificates validate the minor’s age and delineate the scope of duties that the employee can and cannot perform. Age requirements can also differ between jurisdictions. For example, some stores require any employee under the age of 18 to possess a work permit or age certificate, while others require permits or certificates for only 16 and under.

Since work permits and age certificates apply only toward some employees, configuring the work permit requirement occurs on the General tab of the Child Labor Law page. If the Work Permit Reqd or Age Certificate Reqd options are selected, users must enter the work permit or age certificate number and expiration date in Employee Administration for any employee whose birth date falls within the age range.
