Creating or editing a dataset in a dashboard

Once you have created a dashboard, you can create and add a dataset report directly to the dashboard. To do so, you select dataset objects to add to the dashboard, as described in the steps below.

When you create a dataset while viewing a dashboard, the dataset is saved as a local dataset, which is a type of dataset that is saved as part of the dashboard's definition. Changes to a local dataset affect only the dashboard that the dataset has been added to. If desired, you can save a stand-alone copy of your dataset. When you make and save changes to a stand-alone dataset, your changes are automatically reflected in each dashboard or document that uses the dataset, without the need to modify each dashboard or document separately. For steps to save a stand-alone copy of a dataset, see Saving a dataset. For an overview of managed and stand-alone datasets, see About datasets in Visual Insight.

Once you have created a dataset report in a dashboard, you can edit the dataset. For example, you can change which dataset objects to include in the dataset, which attribute forms to display for each attribute, and so on. Steps to do so are provided below.

Prerequisites

To create or edit a dataset in a dashboard:

  1. Click the name of the dashboard to open it, then do one of the following:

  1. To add dataset objects to the dataset, click and drag dataset objects from the list of dataset objects displayed on the left onto the pane in the right.

  1. For each attribute that you add to the dataset, you can determine which attribute forms to include when displaying the attribute in the dashboard. Right-click the attribute and point to Display Attribute Forms. In the pop-up menu, perform the following steps:

  1. To display an attribute form, select the check box next to its name.

  2. To hide an attribute form, clear the check box next to its name. The ID form is displayed by default and cannot be hidden.

  3. Click OK to apply your changes.

  4. To remove a dataset object from the dataset, right-click the object and select Delete.

  5. When finished, click Save to save your changes. If you are creating a dataset, the new dataset is automatically added to the Datasets panel and displayed.
