Working with Task Specifications

Task specifications define units of work that you can associate with activities in engineering work orders. Task specifications can include Checklist specifications that define steps that must be completed to complete the task.

See "Task Specification Editor" for reference information about the tabs you use to define a Task specification. See "Defining Task Properties" for information about selecting a checklist and defining other properties.

Defining Task Properties

After you create a Task specification, you can specify its properties, including the task duration and a checklist. All of the properties are optional.

To specify task properties:

  1. Go to the Task specification editor Properties tab.

  2. In the Duration (in days) field, enter the estimated duration of the task.

  3. In the Allowed User Group field, enter a user group name to restrict UIM users who can be assigned the task.

  4. Select the Is Milestone check box if you want the task to serve as a milestone in UIM. Milestone activities are displayed as diamonds in Gantt charts.

  5. In the Checklist field, click Select.

The Select Checklist dialog box appears.

  6. Select a checklist and click OK.

    The Checklist field is updated.

Relating Resource Specifications with Task Specifications

You can use the Related Specifications tab in the Task editor to relate resource specifications with Task specifications. In UIM, these relationships result in the creation of items in the Actions menu of Activity Workspace sections for activities based on the Task specification. The menu item takes UIM users directly to the New page for entity type and specification.

For example, you could relate the Cisco 3063 Logical Device specification to a Task specification in Design Studio. In UIM, users can create Cisco 3063 logical devices directly from the Activity Workspace section.

You can relate the following types of specifications with Task specifications:

  • Connectivity

  • Custom Network Address

  • Custom Object

  • Equipment

  • Logical Device

  • Logical Device Account

  • Media Stream

  • Property Location

  • Party

  • Physical Device

  • Pipe

  • Telephone Number

To relate resource specifications to Task specifications:

  1. Go to the Task specification editor Related Specifications tab.

  2. Click Select.

The Select Dialog dialog box appears, displaying a list of specifications in the current cartridge project.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Select a specification, and then click OK.

    • Click New, and then create a new specification. See "Creating New Specifications" for more information.

The specification you selected or created appears in the Related Specifications tab.

Field Use
Specification Displays the name of the resource specification.
Cartridge Displays the name of the cartridge project into which the specification is built.
Type Displays the type of the specification, such as Service specification or Place specification.
Select Click to select an existing specification or to create a new one.
Modify Click to modify the relationship properties. The properties related to requirements or to quantity are not meaningful in this case because UIM entities are not created automatically as the result of relationships established in this tab.
Remove Click to remove the related specification.
