Work Skill Group Considerations

Work skill groups are bundles of work skills that you can assign to resources. They help simplify skill maintenance when several resources need the same set of skills or qualification levels.

A work skill group can include predefined qualification levels for specific skills. When you assign work skills one at a time, you can define a unique qualification level for each resource.

If the same work skill is assigned through both a work skill group and an individual work skill assignment, Field Service uses the higher qualification level. Use individual work skill assignments when a resource needs a qualification level that differs from the group value.

Work skill groups don’t change how activity requirements are evaluated. If an activity requires multiple work skills, the resource must satisfy the applicable requirements for those skills. Use work skill groups to simplify resource setup, not to create OR logic for activity assignment.

For example, if activity type ABC can be performed by a resource with Skill A, Skill B, or Skill C, don’t assign all three skills as separate required skills for the activity. Instead, create one qualifying skill, such as ABC Qualified, and assign that skill to the resources who meet the business rule. If many resources need this qualifying skill or the same set of related skills, include the skill in a work skill group and assign the group to those resources.

You assign work skill groups in the same way that you assign individual work skills, except that you don’t select qualification levels for each skill in the group during assignment. You can also edit existing work skill assignments for resources in the same way that you initially assign them.
