General Glossary

.xlf

A standard file format used for UI string translation and Manage Translations exports.

CAT tool

Computer-aided translation tools also use this format, and it can be bilingual—containing both source strings and their translations.

Child String

A Manage Translations string linked to a custom string that inherits description and translations.

Background information.

Context Notes

Additional translator guidance that NetSuite exports with strings for vendors.

Currency Formatting

Currency is formatted based on the selected country's locale. For example, some countries use commas as decimal points and periods for thousands, while others use dots for decimals and commas or spaces for thousands.

Date Formatting

Date and time are formatted based on the selected country's locale. For example, Germany uses Day/Month/Year, but the U.S. uses Month/Day/Year.

Globalization (G11n)

A NetSuite process that combines internationalization, localization, and translatability to meet local standards and languages.

Internationalization (i18n)

A NetSuite development approach that enables features or objects to be localized for different regions.

Locale

A set of parameters that define a user's language and country.

Localization (L10n)

An adaptation in NetSuite that adjusts translated features to country needs, including formats and styles.

Localization Context

Background and country association in NetSuite that guides translation and record localization.

LSP/vendor

A language service provider (LSP) connects customers and translators, organizes translation projects, and manages communication.

Machine Translation (MT)

Machine Translation is software that automatically translates text without human input.

Manage Translations

A NetSuite feature that manages Translation Collections and translation strings for localization. For more information, see Manage Translations.

Parent String

A Manage Translations string that supplies description and translations to child strings.

Platform Internationalization

A NetSuite platform effort that enables localization through ongoing updates.

Phone Number Formatting

Phone number formatting varies by locale. Some countries use a plus sign before the number, while others use one or more zeroes.

Record Localization Context (feature)

A NetSuite feature that links records to countries to drive proper localization in scripts and workflows. For more information, see Record Localization Context.

Source string

Original text in the collection’s default language that translators translate.

Stand-Alone String

A Manage Translations string created by a custom record or object and tied to its life cycle.

SuiteCloud Development Framework (SDF)

A NetSuite framework that defines and deploys customizations, including Translation Collections.

Termbase

A termbase is a database of terms. You can use it to store company-wide terminology and keep terms consistent.

Translatability (T13y)

Translatability means an object can be translated. Anything you want to translate must be developed or changed to be translatable.

Translation

A source string in another language.

Translation Memory (TM)

CAT tools use translation memories to store translated text segments. They're always made for a single language pair and help translators manage terminology for each customer.

Translation String

A translation string has a key (identifier), a source string, and one or more translations of the source string.

Without Collection

A Manage Translations filter that shows only stand-alone strings.

XLF

A filename extension for XLIFF files exported from Manage Translations.The file type is XLIFF.

XLIFF

A file type for strings exported from Manage Translations; associated file extension is .xlf.

Term

Description

Translation Collection

A NetSuite customization object that stores translation strings and their translations.

Translation String

A NetSuite key and source string with one or more translations stored in a collection.

Default Language

Every string in a collection must have a value in the default language. For example, if the default language is French, all strings need a French value.

Default Value

A string’s translation in the collection's default language.

Import Jobs

A Manage Translations list that tracks translation file imports; see the Manage Translations Page Import Jobs Subtab.

Key

In a translation string's key/value pair, the key is the term's identifier. Each string needs a unique key and can be translated into many languages. The key can have up to 255 characters.

Source String

In a translation string's key/value pair, the source string is the text to translate. You can translate it into any language NetSuite supports. For a list of languages supported by NetSuite, see Configuring Multiple Languages.

Translation

A string’s value in a certain language.

Invalidated

A Manage Translations flag that marks strings whose default value changed and may need review.

Missing Translation

A Manage Translations filter that shows strings without a value in a language.

Translation File

A file that holds collection strings for export to vendors and later import.

Target Language

This tag in the translation file sets the target language. You need this tag to import the file.

Without Collection

A Manage Translations filter that shows only stand-alone strings.

XLF

A file type for strings exported from Manage Translations; associated file extension is .xlf.
