Editing Transactions in SuiteTax

When you edit a transaction in SuiteTax, the recalculation of taxes depends on the changes to tax-related fields and on the Tax Details Override setting. The Tax Details Override setting is not available if the nexus determined on the transaction is marked as tax-exempt. If you are editing a migrated transaction from legacy, the Tax Details Override setting is available to preserve the details generated by the legacy tax engine.

The following table shows when the tax engine is called to recalculate taxes when editing a transaction. These conditions apply to both migrated transactions and new transactions in SuiteTax.

Tax Details Override Setting

Result

No change in tax-related fields

Not checked

Tax engine is not called.

When the transaction is saved, the existing tax information on the Tax Details subtab is retained.

If you click the Preview Tax button before saving the transaction, you will be asked if you want to recalculate taxes for the transaction even if tax-related fields were not changed. Click OK on the popup message to call the tax engine and recalculate taxes, or click Cancel to keep the existing tax information.

With changes in tax-related fields

Not checked

Tax lines on the Tax Details subtab are cleared.

When you click the Preview Tax button or save the transaction, the tax engine is called to calculate the taxes. The previously cleared tax lines are replaced by the new tax details returned by the tax engine.

With or without changes in tax-related fields

Checked

Tax lines on the Tax Details subtab are retained, regardless of whether or not tax-related fields are changed.

When the transaction is saved, the tax engine is notified about the changes and all the transaction form data are sent to the tax engine for reporting purposes.

You cannot preview the tax amounts if the Tax Details Override box is checked.
