One of your ideas has been delivered from your suggestion.Issue and Complete the Same Item in a Process Manufacturing Work Order

In specific process industries, it's common practice for manufacturers to recover a product or by-product from the production process and rework it back into the batch for further processing. Another business process takes the product left over from one batch as the starting point for the next batch, such as when filling a product into containers. In these dynamic scenarios, the same item can be used as an ingredient and a product of the batch, creating a circular reference between the batch input and batch output.

With this feature, you can issue and complete the same item in a process manufacturing work order. There are no restrictions that prevent the same item from being used as both the input and output for an operation, or for multiple operations. The added value between the input and output can be costed. However, a process manufacturing work order with a circular reference cannot be planned. We recommend that the work order should be created separately from the planning process and that separate work definitions be used for production execution and planning.

This simplified modeling to use the same item for consumption and completion helps process manufacturers accurately reflect their physical production processes without unnecessary changes to manufacturing setups and execution.

Here's the demo of these capabilities:

Steps to Enable

Use the Opt In UI to enable this feature. For instructions, refer to the Optional Uptake of New Features section of this document.

Offering: Manufacturing and Supply Chain Materials ManagementNo Longer Optional From: Update 26A

Tips And Considerations

  • The Opt-in choice cannot be updated after you add an output item as input and transact the item in material or output transactions.
  • You can also report material and output transactions for a work order operation using the "Execute Production at a Workstation" action.
