When managing goods under lot control, various situations may require you to split, merge, or otherwise adjust the lot assignments for certain items. For instance, if a weather incident damages your warehouse and only part of a lot is affected, the compromised portion might still be suitable for some manufacturing uses but not others. In this case, you need to separate the usable quantity from the original lot and assign it a new lot number to accurately track its intended use. Similarly, you may routinely combine multiple lots into a single vat before downstream processing. When these lots are merged, a new unique lot number is assigned to the resulting batch.

In other cases, certain industries require a lot number change after a chemical reaction process is complete. For example, a work order might produce item 123 into lot A, and after a two-week curing process, the lot is reclassified as lot B to indicate readiness for the next production stage. Here, the item itself remains unchanged and it’s unnecessary to create a separate work order solely to update the lot number, though it’s important to maintain a record of lot history.

In all these scenarios, the changes to lot numbers help ensure clear designation and traceability of goods for future use. Now you can perform these lot split, merge, and translate transactions using Redwood and mobile pages.

For mobile users, a new Lot Transactions task is available in Mobile Inventory, enabling users to perform lot split and lot merge transactions directly from mobile devices.

Item and Transaction Type

For desktop users, lot split and merge transactions remain available on the Item Quantities page. From the Lots tab, select a lot and initiate the transaction from the Actions (three dots) menu.

Lot Split

Split a single source lot into multiple resultant lots. Resultant lots inherit attributes from the source lot and can be updated as required. Quantities can be distributed within a single subinventory or across multiple subinventories.

Add Source Lot for Split Lot

After selecting Lot Split as the transaction type, the user adds a single source lot to be split. The user then navigates to the Resultant Lots tab to define one or more resultant lots and distribute the quantities accordingly.

From the Resultant Lots tab, users can add multiple resultant lots until the entire source lot quantity is allocated, either by scanning the lot or by manually adding it using the Actions (three-dots) menu in the top-right corner. Once the quantities are fully distributed, the user selects Split Lot to complete the transaction.

Lot Merge

Merge multiple source lots into a single resultant lot. Quantities from the source lots are summed, and a new unique lot number is assigned to the merged lot.

Adding Source lot for merge lot

Add Source Lot for Merge Lot

After selecting Lot Merge as the transaction type, the user adds multiple source lots to be merged.

The user then navigates to the Resultant Lots tab to add the resultant lot and selects Merge Lot to complete the transaction.

Lot Translate

Translate a single source lot into a single resultant lot within the same item. Use this to correct lot numbers or to reclassify a lot after process completion, while retaining full lot genealogy.

After the user selects Lot Translate, a single source lot is added for translation. The user can then move to the Resultant Lots tab to define the translated lot. The user selects Submit to complete the transaction.

These enhancements reduce manual effort, improve accuracy, and provide consistent lot transaction capabilities across mobile and desktop experiences.

This feature increases your operational flexibility and lot traceability by providing a centralized place to perform lot split, merge, and translate transactions.

Steps to enable and configure

You don't need to do anything to enable this feature.

Tips and considerations

  • Lot split, merge, and translate transactions are allowed only when sufficient available quantity exists for the item.
  • Lot attributes are inherited by the resultant lot; however, they can be overridden if required.
  • Inventory tracking attributes must be the same for both source and resultant lots.
  • Serial-controlled items are supported for lot split, merge, and translate transactions.
  • Disabled inventory lots can still be reused for lot split, merge, and translate transactions.
  • Lot translation to a different item isn't supported.
  • Consigned inventory isn't supported for lot split, merge, and translate transactions.
  • If a representative lot isn't specified during a lot merge, the system automatically selects the lot with the highest available quantity.
  • Lot split, merge, and translate transactions support multiple transaction units of measure (UOM).
  • These transactions support execution at the inventory locator level.
