Enforce Confirmation of Work Instruction Step When Executing Production at a Workstation

In industries that demand precision and strict compliance, every manufacturing step instruction must be properly executed and recorded. Manufacturing engineers can now define and flag mandatory steps within work instructions, ensuring that operators complete and confirm each step to complete an operation. During production execution, operators must follow the provided step-by-step instructions.

With this update, manufacturing engineers can set the instruction enforcement behavior for each operation. The following settings are available:

  • Optional - Instructions are available during execution, the operator can complete them optionally. This is the universal behavior for all instructions before this update.
  • Once per execution session - Instructions are mandatory for each execution session, which is a single Start to Stop cycle during production execution. You can report multiple transactions after completing the instructions.
  • For Every Completion - Instructions are mandatory for each quantity reporting event. Select this option if you want the steps to be enforced every time an operation is transacted.

When you create a digital work instruction task using journeys, each step is marked as 'Mandatory' by default. If you disable this, then users can skip steps for optional or mandatory instructions.

When the Operator executes an operation that is set to Once or Each Completion, and if there are tasks defined for the instruction steps, then the operator must complete these steps to proceed with transaction reporting.

With enforced step-level confirmation, businesses gain greater operational discipline and process reliability, boost compliance with regulated or validated procedures, and strengthen audit and traceability for every manufactured product.

Steps to enable and configure

This feature requires the 24D feature, Author Work Instruction Tasks for a Work Definition Operation which is permanently opted-in from the 25B update..

Tips and considerations

  • Select the Instruction behavior to match the level of enforcement. This enforces the completion of the instruction during execution.
    • Selecting 'Once' implies that each operation session requires mandatory instruction completion. After completing the instruction, you can report multiple transactions before stopping the operation.
    • Selecting 'Each Completion' means that instructions must be followed for each operation transaction reporting. This is useful for scenarios where instructions are completed in-line for every unit or batch being reported as a transaction. You can enforce this behavior for both 'Serialized' and 'Non-Serialized' operations.
  • You can independently choose tasks to be mandatory. This is to specify which steps must be completed to complete the instruction.
  • The ability to pause and resume step completion across shifts is supported, the next operator resumes from the last completed step.
  • The Production Execution task supports work instructions both with and without workstations.
  • Work Instruction enforcement does not work in the classic interface (Review Dispatch List).
  • In this release, the instruction step details are not made available in electronic signature records, work definition reports, work order travelers, and electronic production records.

Users who are assigned a configured job role that contains these privileges and duty roles can use this feature:

Name Code Description
View Work Definitions WIS_VIEW_WORK_DEFINITIONS_PRIV This privilege allows users to view work definitions and the details of the work definitions.
Manage Work Definitions WIS_MANAGE_WORK_DEFINITIONS_PRIV This privilege allows users to edit the work definition details.
Execute Production at a Workstation WIP_EXECUTE_WORKSTATION Allows check-ins, checkouts, and reporting of operation execution progress at a workstation.
Digital Work Instructions access duty ORA_PER_SCM_DIGITAL_WORK_INSTRUCTIONS_ACCESS_DUTY Allows workers to access their assigned digital work instructions (digital work instruction assigned journeys).
Digital Work Instructions Builder ORA_PER_SCM_DIGITAL_WORK_INSTRUCTIONS_BUILDER_DUTY Allows management of digital work instructions (digital work instruction journeys).
