Manufacturers need an efficient way to manage work definitions that apply to multiple organizations where a product can be manufactured. In this case, they want to avoid creating and maintaining separate work definitions for the same item in each organization.

With this update, you can now create a global work definition in an item master organization and assign it to child organizations enabled as manufacturing plants. When you are in the item master organization, a new action Assign Global Work Definition is available on the Work Definitions page. You can selectively assign a global work definition to chosen child organizations or to all child organizations. The assignment is processed by the Propagate Global Work Definitions scheduled process. The results and errors, if any, are captured in the output file of the scheduled process. You need to monitor the scheduled process, review the output file, and take appropriate actions to resolve the errors.

If a global work definition is successfully assigned, a replicated work definition is created in the child organization. The replicated work definition is read-only except for these attributes: completion subinventory and locator, supply subinventory and locator, and supplier and supplier site for a supplier operation. An indicator "Replicated" is displayed and selected.

If you deselect the Replicated checkbox, the replicated work definition is unlinked from the global work definition and becomes an independent work definition. Any subsequent changes to the global work definition are no longer synced with the child organization. If you unlink a work definition for a child organization, you cannot link it again.

Adding or deleting a version in a global work definition as well as deleting, deactivating, or reactivating a global work definition is also processed by the Propagate Global Work Definitions scheduled process. If this action fails in a child organization, the change isn’t committed in the item master organization or any child organization. After correcting the errors, you need to perform the action again in the item master organization.

A global work definition lets you centrally create and manage a work definition in the item master organization. This results in a streamlined change management process and reduces the time spent in managing work definitions that are common across organizations. It also helps maintain work definition accuracy as changes are controlled centrally.

Steps to enable and configure

Use the Opt In UI to enable this feature. For instructions, refer to the Optional Uptake of New Features section of this document.

Tips and considerations

  • This feature is available only with the Redwood experience, which can be enabled using the profile option, Redwood Work Definitions Enabled.
  • This feature is applicable to Discrete Manufacturing, Flow Manufacturing, and Process Manufacturing.
  • As a best practice, set up a single item master organization and enable it as a manufacturing plant.
  • The following building blocks that make up a global work definition in an item master organization must exist in the child organization:
    • Items
    • A common item structure or formula. Formulas are applicable to process manufacturing.
    • Work definition name
    • Production line code - Applicable to flow manufacturing
    • Standard operation code
    • Work center code
    • Resource code
  • A global work definition can't be created in an item master org if electronic signatures are enabled for work definitions in the organization.
  • A global work definition can't be assigned to a child organization if electronic signatures are enabled for work definitions in the organization.
  • A global work definition can't be an automatic work definition.
  • Assigning a global work definition using ADFdi, File-Based Data Import (FBDI), and REST APIs is currently not supported.
  • You can continue to create a work definition directly in a child organization with no change in behavior.
