Scan a label with item, subinventory, and locator once to populate all fields on a mobile device

In fast-paced warehouse environments, operators are expected to process inventory transactions quickly while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. However, many receiving, inventory, and fulfillment processes require users to scan multiple pieces of information, such as item numbers, subinventories, locators, lot numbers, and serial numbers. Even when barcode scanning is available, users may need to perform multiple scans to populate all required fields, increasing transaction time and creating additional opportunities for data entry errors.

To improve productivity and streamline mobile workflows, organizations are increasingly adopting barcode standards that encode multiple inventory attributes within a single barcode. While existing mobile transactions can automatically populate item, lot, and serial number fields from a single concatenated barcode scan, users still need to perform additional scans or manual entries for storage location information. This feature expands concatenated barcode support to include subinventory and locator data, enabling a single barcode scan to populate any combination of item, subinventory, locator, lot, and serial number fields.

With this enhancement, warehouse operators can scan a concatenated barcode label on a mobile device to automatically populate the applicable transaction fields. The application parses the barcode and propagates the captured values to the appropriate pages in the transaction flow, reducing repetitive scanning and manual data entry.

This enhancement helps organizations process mobile inventory transactions more efficiently, improve the accuracy of inventory, lot, and serial tracking, and support high-volume and regulated warehouse operations.

For example, an operator can scan one concatenated barcode containing the item, subinventory, locator, lot, and serial number, instead of scanning or entering each value separately. This reduces repetitive scanning and manual data entry, improves data accuracy, and helps users complete mobile inventory transactions more efficiently.

Applicable mobile transactions

This feature supports the following mobile transactions and flows:

  • Miscellaneous Transactions
  • Confirm Picks
  • Cycle Counts
  • Lot Transactions
  • PAR Count
  • Physical Count
  • Repack LPN
  • Receive Goods
  • Inspect Goods
  • Put Away Goods
  • Interorganization Transfers
  • Subinventory Transfers

By reducing the number of scans required to complete transactions, organizations can accelerate inventory processing, improve data accuracy, simplify operator workflows, and increase overall warehouse efficiency.

Steps to enable and configure

You don't need to do anything to enable this feature.

Tips and considerations

  • Configure each field that you want the application to identify and populate, such as item, item revision, subinventory, locator, LPN, lot, and serial number, in the barcode format before users scan the barcode.
  • The application identifies and populates only the fields configured in the barcode format and available in the mobile transaction.
  • Use the expected scan sequence for the transaction. For example, scan the LPN, item, and then the applicable attributes in the order required by the transaction flow.
  • When multiple scans are used, the first scan establishes the transaction context, such as subinventory or purchase order. Subsequent scans must match that context.
  • Partial barcode scans are supported. Users can complete any remaining required fields manually.
  • If a barcode contains fields that aren’t available in the mobile transaction, the application ignores those fields.
  • If a barcode is invalid, unreadable, or incorrectly formatted, the application displays an error and doesn’t populate the fields.
  • Users can override automatically populated values only when permitted by their assigned roles and existing configuration.
  • All scanned and derived values must comply with existing item, organization, and transaction rules.
  • Scanned values take precedence over existing default values. If a barcode doesn’t include a field, existing transaction defaulting can populate the field when configured. Otherwise, users can enter or select the field manually.
  • Partial barcode scans are supported. If the barcode includes fewer fields than are available in the mobile transaction, the remaining fields stay blank unless existing defaulting rules populate them.
