Why am I receiving notifications for contracts that have expired?

From the Manage Contract Types page you can choose to send notifications before contract expiration. If the setup is performed, the contact role to be notified will receive a notification when the Send Contract Expiration Notifications scheduled process is run and the condition is satisfied.

You can choose to deselect the Notify before expiration check box for a specific contract from the Edit Contract Type UI as shown:
