Deploy and Patch Independently, Starting with a Standby Database

This is the recommended use case when patching Grid Infrastructure databases, first deploying the software to the primary and standby databases. Then patching the standby databases and finally the primary databases.

  1. Deploy the software to the hosts of primary and standby databases.
    1. In Enterprise Manager click on Targets and select Databases. In the Databases page click on Administration and from the drop down menu select Fleet Maintenance.
    2. Select the FPP image to which the databases are subscribed to, filter by Image selecting the Gold Image to be used, Target Type use Cluster Database (Database Instance for non Grid Infrastructure databases), and select Update under Operation. This will show only the databases subscribed to the image.
    3. Select all primary databases requiring an update and click Next.

      Note:

You cannot select primary and standby databases in the same Fleet Maintenance session.
    4. In the Operation page Software Deployment will be automatically selected ensure the information presented is correct and select a Start time. Enter the Home Name Prefix if your environment requires a custom Oracle Home name prefix, this feature is available starting with Oracle Enterprise Manager 13.5 Release update 20 (13.5.0.20). Make sure the Update Cluster task is NOT enabled, as this is a deploy only step. In the Options section, under Software Deployment the Data Guard Options select Standby Auto Deploy, this will allow the software deployment to occur for both primary and standby databases. Specify Credentials, including the FPP REST User credential and Pre/Post Script inputs and click Next.
    5. In the Review click on Validate and select Quick to perform a quick validation or Full to perform a full validation (full validations submit a deployment procedure). Once the validation completes successfully, submit the operation by clicking Submit. Enter a name for the procedure and click Submit once again.
    6. Click on Monitor Progress to view the operation in the Procedure Activity Page. Once the procedure completes successfully you can update the standby databases.
  2. Update the standby databases

The Deploy status should show Complete for both primary and standby databases.

    3. Select all standby databases requiring an update and click Next.
    4. In the Operation page Software Deployment will be grayed out. Enable the Update Cluster task by check marking it and select a Start time.

      Note:

Set the schedule time for the update at a time that starts after the deployment completes. This could be the time in your maintenance window when the standby can be patched. Allow enough time for the software deployment to complete and time for corrective actions. If the deployment is already successfully complete, you may schedule this Immediately.
In the Options section, under Software Deployment the Data Guard Options select the option most convenient for your environment:
      • Startup After Switch: Selected by default, this will be restore the standby to the same status as before the update.
      • Disable Data Guard: Choose this option if the standby is managed by a Data Guard Broker.
Once the procedure completes successfully you can update the primary databases.
  3. Update the primary databases
