Deploy and Patch Together, Starting with a Standby Database
This is an alternative to patching Grid Infrastructure databases, first deploying the software and patching to the standby databases. Then deploying and patching the primary databases.
- Deploy the software and Update the standby database.
- In Enterprise Manager click on Targets and select Databases. In the Databases page click on Administration and from the drop down menu select Fleet Maintenance.
- Select the FPP image to which the databases are subscribed to, filter by Image selecting the Gold Image to be used, Target Type use Cluster (Database Instance for non Grid Infrastructure databases), and select Update under Operation. This will show only the databases subscribed to the image.
- Select all standby databases requiring an update and click Next.
Note:
You cannot select primary and standby databases in the same Fleet Maintenance session. - In the Operation page Software Deployment will be automatically selected ensure the information presented is correct and select a Start time. Enable the Update Cluster task by check marking it and select a Start time. Enter the Home Name Prefix if your environment requires a custom Oracle Home name prefix, this feature is available starting with Oracle Enterprise Manager 13.5 Release update 20 (13.5.0.20).
Note:
The scheduled time for the update can be either Immediately/Auto or Later. If you select Immediately the patching operation will begin immediately after the deployment operation is successfully completed. When selecting Later make sure there is ample time between operations in case of issues.- Startup After Switch: Selected by default, this will be restore the standby to the same status as before the update.
- Disable Data Guard: Choose this option if the standby is managed by a Data Guard Broker.
- In the Review click on Validate and select Quick to perform a quick validation or Full to perform a full validation (full validations submit a deployment procedure). Once the validation completes successfully, submit the operation by clicking Submit. Enter a name for the procedure and click Submit once again.
- Click on Monitor Progress to view the operation in the Procedure Activity Page. Once the procedure completes you have successfully updated the standby databases and can move to updating the primary databases.
- Deploy the software and update the primary database.
- In Enterprise Manager click on Targets and select Databases. In the Databases page click on Administration and from the drop down menu select Fleet Maintenance.
- Select the FPP image to which the databases are subscribed to, filter by Image selecting the Gold Image to be used, Target Type use Cluster (Database Instance for non Grid Infrastructuredatabases), and select Update under Operation. This will show only the databases subscribed to the image.
The Deploy status should show Complete for both primary and standby databases.
- Select all primary databases requiring an update and click Next.
- In the Operation page Software Deployment will be automatically selected, ensure the information presented is correct and select a Start time. Enable the Update Cluster task by check marking it and select a Start time.
Note:

- Enable FSFO (Fast-Start Failover): FSFO can be enabled when DG broker is on.
- Startup Standby: Specify to startup the Standby databases after primary is patched.
- In the Review click on Validate and select Quick to perform a quick validation or Full to perform a full validation (full validations submit a deployment procedure). Once the validation completes successfully, submit the operation by clicking Submit. Enter a name for the procedure and click Submit once again.
- Click on Monitor Progress to view the operation in the Procedure Activity Page. Once the procedure completes successfully have updated the primary databases.
