Introduction to Working with Content in a Portal

WebCenter Portal provides several different containers in which to display and manage content, enabling end users with appropriate permissions to manipulate and display that content in a variety of ways.

In WebCenter Portal, there are several ways to work with portal content:

• Content Contribution and Publishing. Enables users to quickly add images, text, and video to a portal page. When an Image, Text, or Styled Text component is present on a page, a user who is granted Edit Page or Contribute Page Content permission can contribute images, text, or video to the page at runtime.

• Sophisticated Content. Design portal pages and add components to portal pages, such as calendars, activity streams, data visualizations, message boards, tag clouds, and portlets.

• Content Presenter. Enables users to precisely customize the selection and presentation of content in a portal. When a Content Presenter task flow is present on a page, a user who is granted Edit Page permission can select content from the Oracle WebCenter Content Server (a single item of content, contents under a folder, a list of items, or content query), and then select a template to render the content on a page in a portal. The Content Presenter task flow is available only when the system administrator has completed the prerequisite WebCenter Content Server configuration, but Content Presenter has no dependency on the Documents tool for adding or managing the content it displays.

• Content Manager. Enables users to work with libraries, folders, and files in the connected WebCenter Content Server repository. It offers an easy and intuitive user interface with sophisticated searching capabilities. When a Content Manager task flow is available on a page, a user who is granted Edit Page permission can configure the task flow to present a customized view, called a pin, of the content, rather than the default view listing folders and files. The Content Manager task flow is available only when the system administrator has completed the prerequisite WebCenter Content Server configuration and the portal manager has enabled the Documents tool.

• Data Presentation. Retrieves and presents data on a portal page in a variety of visualizations, such as a bar graph, pie chart, or list. For information about the methods to create data presentations, see Presenting Application Data in a Portal.

• Wikis. Enable multiple users to collaborate on content that is relevant, useful, and up-to-date. Wikis are available only when the portal manager has enabled the Documents tool.

• Blogs. Enable users to create and manage personal blogs to record experiences and opinions, and group related blog posts. Blogs are available only when the portal manager has enabled the Documents tool.

After a portal manager has provided access to content by adding task flows or components to a page, end users can create and edit content at runtime, work with documents, and collaborate on wikis and blogs in a portal.
