Validate Your DR Plans

Perform basic checks and run your disaster recovery (DR) plans.

Perform Prechecks

Run the prechecks to perform a basic check of the DR plans.

  1. Log onto the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console.
  2. Navigate to the standby DR Protection Group.
  3. Click Plans, then click the plan you want to check.
  4. Click Run Prechecks.
This will run the built-in prechecks but will not perform any switchover action.
  5. Monitor the process in the Console.
You can view the logs of every step.

Execute the Switchover DR Plan

To completely validate a disaster recovery (DR) plan, you must run the plan. This requires a downtime because the primary is stopped and started in the new primary. It is best to schedule this task during a maintenance window.

After you run the plan, OCI Full Stack Disaster Recovery Service automatically changes the role in the DR Protection Group.

  1. Log onto the OCI Console.
  2. Navigate to the standby DR Protection Group.
  3. Click Plans, then click the plan you want to check.
  4. Click Execute Plan.
  5. Monitor the process in the OCI Console.
You can view the logs of every step.

Execute the Failover DR Plan

To execute a Failover DR plan, follow the same steps as running a switchover plan, but choose the failover plan name instead. After you run a failover plan and when the primary site is ready again, you must manually reset the DR system for a future switchback. You can only perform the post-failover steps (Steps 2, 3, and 4) when the primary site is ready again, which might be hours or days later.
  1. Execute your Failover DR plan.
    1. Log onto the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console.
    2. Navigate to the standby DR Protection Group.
    3. Click Plans, then click the plan you want to check.
    4. Click Execute Plan.
    5. Monitor the progress in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console.
You can view the logs of every step. Go to the next step after the failover plan completes.
  2. Once the primary region is available again, perform the post-failover steps to manually reset the DR system for a future switchback.
    1. Stop the Oracle WebLogic processes in old primary if they are still up.
    2. Perform the Oracle Data Guard reinstate operation on the new standby database.
Use the Database System page in OCI Console so the state is consistently updated in the OCI Console.
    3. For the model based on Block Volume DR replica, perform the following:
      1. Enable the cross-region replication in the new primary Block Volume groups.
      2. Unmount and detach the block volumes in the old primary system.
      3. Remove the Volume group as members from the old primary DR Protection Group definition.
      4. Terminate the unused Block volumes and Volume groups in the old primary system.
      5. Update the Block Volume tab properties in the compute instance members of the DR Protection Groups, as they may be stale.
